It also helps prevent dangerous electrical feedback between utility and generator power. Choosing one means matching the switch to the electrical service, generator, and installation—not simply choosing an amp rating.
What a generator ATS does
An ATS connects selected electrical loads to one of two power sources: utility power, called the normal source, or generator power, called the standby source. Generac describes its switch as transferring loads after utility power fails or is substantially reduced and generator voltage and frequency reach acceptable levels. The purpose includes preventing electrical feedback between the sources. See Generac’s standby generator transfer-switch information.
The order and timing of generator start, transfer, and return to utility power depend on the specific generator, switch, and controller. There is no universal delay or sequence that applies to every pairing; use the exact equipment manuals.
How to choose a compatible ATS
Start with the actual electrical service and the generator’s approved equipment pairing. An ATS’s nominal amp rating by itself does not show that it is compatible. Manufacturer manuals specify model-specific limits and configurations.

Match the service rating and configuration
Determine the service rating and arrangement at the property rather than estimating from the home’s age or size. Briggs & Stratton’s residential product examples include 100-amp service, 150- and 200-amp options, and dual 200/400-amp distribution for some larger homes and small businesses. Verify generator and controller compatibility
Check the exact generator model and controller documentation for an approved ATS pairing. Do not assume that switches with the same amp rating can be substituted across generator models. Generac’s manual library provides model-specific manuals, including operating details and equipment limits for particular switch series.

Check the electrical arrangement and equipment ratings
Compare the service and installation requirements with the ATS label and manual. Relevant details include voltage, phase, number of poles, whether neutral is switched, service-entrance status, overcurrent protection, and available fault-current limits. The correct arrangement is model- and installation-specific. For example, one Generac manual describes a single-phase configuration with neutral connected to a neutral lug and not switched; that example does not establish a rule for all ATS installations.
Also confirm that the equipment’s listing and enclosure ratings suit the intended location and conditions. A listing or enclosure rating should not be assumed to cover every site condition; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Account for generator capacity and large loads
Consider both running loads and the demands of appliances as they start. If large loads could exceed generator capacity, a compatible load-management option may help control which loads operate. Generac documents smart load-management options for certain systems, and Briggs & Stratton lists accessories for its products. Verify compatibility with the exact generator and ATS. A load-management module does not increase the generator’s capacity.

Generac’s RXSC/RXSW-series manual names NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code; UL 1008, the Standard for Safety—Automatic Transfer Switches; and UL 67, the Panelboards Marking and Application Guide. It says, “It is essential to use the latest version of any standard to ensure correct and current information.” Applicable editions and local adoption can differ, so confirm the requirements for the jurisdiction and installation rather than treating a particular edition as universally current. Consult the manual for the exact switch model.

An ATS is part of a safety-critical electrical system. Have the service, equipment compatibility, and applicable code requirements evaluated for the actual installation; product examples are not a substitute for that assessment. Do not use a generic online procedure to operate a switch manually. Generac says manual operation may sometimes be needed if electronic operation fails, but directs users to model-specific instructions and emphasizes testing and inspection. It specifically cautions against attempting manual generator operation if the generator failed to start or shows signs of water intrusion after a storm surge. See Generac’s manual-operation guidance.
