Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s approximately 53-acre Santa Fe estate was listed for $6.25 million in January 2026 and later sold. The final sale price was not disclosed in the reports reviewed, so $6.25 million is the asking price—not a confirmed closing price.

Did Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe estate sell, and for how much?

Yes. The property went under contract eight days after its January 2026 listing, and Sotheby’s International Realty later reported that it sold after about one month on the market. The brokerage’s September 3, 2026 account did not state the closing price. A February report likewise said the contract price was undisclosed and noted that New Mexico does not require home sale prices to be made public. Realtor.com’s February 2026 report and Sotheby’s International Realty’s sale account therefore establish the listing figure and sale status, but not the final amount paid.

What was included in the property?

The gated estate in the Santa Fe Summit community comprised roughly 53 acres and about 13,000 square feet spread across three buildings. Albuquerque Journal reported the individual building areas and total bedroom and bathroom counts:

Building or feature Reported details
Main residence 8,813 square feet
Guesthouse 2,367 square feet
Studio 1,824 square feet
Whole property Six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms

The listing also described a lap pool, hot tub, putting green, and extensive grounds. Architectural Digest characterized the main house as contemporary-meets-adobe, with floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed beams, native stone, a library, a large kitchen, and fireplaces. Architectural Digest’s account of the home details its design and amenities.

How the compound was used and prepared for sale

Hackman used the studio for painting, while Arakawa kept concert pianos there, according to the Albuquerque Journal’s reporting. Builder Doug McDowell described the design as having “a real elegant simplicity to it.” The home was professionally staged before listing, and the estate was to cover repairs that included a new roof.

What happened at the home

Hackman and Arakawa were found at the estate in February 2025. Investigators’ findings, as reported at the time, said Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman died days later of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease. The property’s later listing and sale were reported in that context, but the sale reports do not establish that the deaths determined the eventual transaction price.

How the listing agent described the pricing

Realtor.com reported that Sotheby’s listing agent Tara Earley acknowledged some buyers might be reluctant to purchase a home where a death had occurred. She said the agents focused on the property’s merits and priced it at what they considered fair market value. That is Earley’s assessment of the listing strategy, not an independent market valuation or proof of the final sale price.
