The right planting method depends on your space, soil, sunlight, access, budget, and willingness to water—not on one method being best for everyone. Use in-ground beds when you have usable soil and room; consider raised beds when the ground is poor or hard to reach; and grow in containers when your space is paved or small. Trellises and space-saving planting techniques can make any of those options work harder.

Start with the conditions your garden has to work with

Before choosing a layout, check the conditions that will determine what can thrive and what you can comfortably maintain. NC State Extension recommends choosing plants suited to the light available and using a soil test report to guide soil amendments.

  • Sunlight: Note how much direct light the area receives, then choose plants suited to it.
  • Ground and soil: Decide whether you have soil to plant in, and whether it drains well and is suitable for your intended crops.
  • Space: Consider the growing area as well as room for paths, containers, and access.
  • Plants: Choose the vegetables or other plants you want to grow before settling on a bed or container size.
  • Access: Think about how far you can comfortably reach and whether bending or kneeling is a concern.
  • Maintenance: Be realistic about the time you can give to watering, weeding, and managing plants.

Compare the main planting methods

Method Good fit when Tradeoffs and setup
In-ground garden You have usable soil, enough room, and want a comparatively inexpensive setup. Generally requires more space than raised beds or containers. Plan paths to avoid compacting growing areas. Water stays longer and roots stay cooler than in raised beds, but weeds from adjacent paths can be difficult to manage. NC State Extension
Raised bed Native soil is poor, wet, compacted, or difficult to work, or improved drainage and easier access would help. Requires initial setup and suitable soil or amendments. Raised beds can drain better, warm earlier in spring, and improve access. Virginia Cooperative Extension
Container You have a patio, balcony, windowsill, doorstep, or other small or paved area, or want a movable planting option. Choose a container and growing medium suited to the plants, provide drainage, and plan for watering. Virginia Cooperative Extension

When an in-ground garden makes sense

Planting directly in the ground is a straightforward option when the soil is suitable and the site has room for both beds and paths. It can be a comparatively inexpensive way to begin. Allow for paths so foot traffic does not compact the growing area; also account for weeds that may spread from paths beside the garden. Compared with raised beds, in-ground soil tends to hold water longer and keep roots cooler.

When to choose a raised bed

A raised bed can make a challenging site easier to garden in, especially where native soil is poor, wet, compacted, or hard to work. Better drainage and easier reach can be useful advantages, and raised soil may warm earlier in spring. The tradeoff is the initial work of building or mounding the bed and providing appropriate soil or amendments.

Plan access before choosing a design

Virginia Cooperative Extension advises making a bed narrow enough to reach its center. A bed accessible from both sides can be narrower than one approached from only one side. The right width depends on your site and reach; there is no single size that suits every gardener. Raised beds can be made by mounding soil or by using sides, so a constructed frame is not the only approach.

When containers are the practical choice

Containers let you grow plants where there is no usable ground, including on balconies, patios, windowsills, and other paved areas. Success depends on matching the container and growing medium to the plant, ensuring excess water can drain, and making watering part of your routine. A small footprint does not automatically mean less upkeep: the container, its drainage, and watering needs all matter.

Use vertical space and planting techniques to grow more thoughtfully

Support suitable crops vertically

Vining or sprawling crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and pole beans can grow on a trellis, cage, net, string, or pole. This uses vertical rather than additional ground space. Consider the support’s shade when placing nearby plants, and keep an eye on watering: exposed plants may dry faster.

Combine space-saving techniques with your garden type

Intensive planting, succession planting, and intercropping are techniques for making better use of a growing area or getting successive crops through the season. They can be used with an in-ground garden, raised bed, or containers; they are not separate garden types. Match them to crop spacing, the season, and the time you can devote to managing the planting.

Make the choice you can maintain

Choose the setup that addresses your biggest constraint without creating more work than you want. Usable soil and room point toward in-ground planting; difficult soil or access may favor a raised bed; and paved or limited space points toward containers. Add vertical supports or intensive techniques only where they suit your crops and management capacity.

Start with a manageable garden and expand as you gain experience. As NC State Extension puts it: “Whichever garden type or combination of types and techniques you choose, remember to start small, select plants appropriate for the season, that thrive in the light you have, make amendments to the soil based on your soil test report, manage the weeds and diseases, and only plant what you can manage easily and joyfully.” Growing calendars and crop recommendations should be adapted to your location and season.
