The “Source of Life” dome at Expo 2025 Osaka demonstrates aquaponics: aquatic animals live in tanks beneath stacked plant beds, while microbes convert fish waste into nutrients plants can use. Its design shows how water and nutrients can circulate between growing zones. It does not, by itself, establish that a dome farm can produce food profitably or reliably at city scale.
What is the Source of Life dome?
Called “Inochi no Izumi” (いのちの湧水), or “Source of Life,” the installation was part of the Osaka Health Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. VikingDome describes it as a combination of hydroponics—growing plants in water—and land-based aquaculture. The builder lists a height of 6.4 metres, 245 structural struts, 76 T-STAR connectors on the sphere, 10 base connectors and a structural-frame weight of 2,111 kg; these are builder-reported specifications, not independent measurements. New Atlas reported a transparent dome 7 metres in diameter, with four aquatic water zones and four vertically stacked plant layers. How does an aquaponics dome work?
The exhibit’s reported arrangement pairs water tanks with plant-growing zones. Animals in the tanks produce ammonia-rich waste. Microbes convert ammonia first into nitrites and then nitrates, which plants can take up. Water is pumped from each tank to its corresponding growing zone; after plants absorb nutrients, water returns to the tank. “Closed loop” describes the circulation concept, not a system proven to need no outside inputs or generate no waste. The available descriptions do not establish the dome’s measured water use, energy demand, harvests or operating performance.
How are the plants matched to the water zones?
New Atlas describes distinct salinity conditions across the exhibit: seawater, brackish water and two freshwater tanks, paired with plant beds and species suited to those conditions. The reported examples include salt-tolerant plants above seawater zones, tomatoes above a brackish-water zone, leafy “functional vegetables” over a freshwater system and edible flowers at the highest tier. What does the dome demonstrate—and what remains unknown?
The dome offers a visible demonstration of how aquaculture and plant production can be arranged together, including stacked growing beds and zones tailored to different water salinities. That makes it a useful design concept to examine, but an exhibition is not a commercial farm performance trial.
The cited project and Expo descriptions do not report whether the installation operated profitably or reliably over the long term. They provide no verified figures for crop yields or quality, water savings, energy use, capital or operating costs, labor needs, animal welfare, or ongoing maintenance. Nor do they establish that the dome supplied food commercially or continued operating after Expo 2025.

What would cities need to measure before adopting this model?
A city or operator assessing a similar project would need evidence across the whole system, not just its appearance or circulation diagram:
- Food output: harvest volume, crop quality and consistency across seasons.
- Resource use: water inputs and losses, energy consumption and any external nutrients or other inputs.
- Operations: labor, maintenance, reliability and how the system performs over time.
- Economics: construction and equipment costs, ongoing expenses, and revenue at realistic production levels.
- Animal care: conditions and welfare outcomes for aquatic species.
- Site fit: land footprint, suitable crop mix and whether separate salinity zones justify their added complexity.
These are evaluation questions, not known results for the Source of Life installation. The Expo’s wider food-and-agriculture theme focused on connecting producers, sellers and consumers through a food value chain; that context explains the pavilion’s framing, but does not establish the dome’s commercial output.
