Start with the question children want to investigate, then match it to their age, available space, schedule and supplies. A packaged kit is optional: classroom activities can use store-cupboard seeds, small pots and recycled containers.
Choose a project by its question and practical demands
Before gathering supplies, decide what students will explore: seed structure, germination, measurement or how a growing condition affects a plant. Then consider how often the class can observe the plants, where they can grow, and who will water them. These activities offer different formats, not a universal ranking.
| Project | Question or focus | Time and space | Core supplies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed safari and dissection | How do seeds differ, and what can we see inside one? | Can begin as a focused classroom observation | Varied seeds, hand lenses, soaked lima beans, paper or notebooks |
| Germination race | How do seedlings develop, and how tall do they grow? | Repeated observations; needs a place to keep seedlings | Seeds, growing containers or paper-towel setup, labels, ruler |
| Store-cupboard seed experiment | How does a chosen factor—such as light, water or planting depth—affect growth? | RHS suggests evaluating observations after three to four weeks | Dried beans or peas, containers with holes, compost, labels, watering equipment |
| Seed starter or egghead planter | What happens after a seed is planted? | Individual starters can be kept on a suitable growing surface | Seed, pot or rinsed eggshell, potting medium, water |
| Longer-term classroom growing | How does a plant change over time, and how can a class care for a garden? | Ongoing observations; a garden or greenhouse can extend the project | Seeds or plants, growing area, containers or garden space, watering plan |
Start by observing seeds
Seed safari and dissection
Give students several kinds of seeds to compare by shape, size and texture. With a hand lens, they can draw what they see and label their observations. Older or carefully supervised students can examine a soaked lima bean to look inside a seed. The National Agriculture in the Classroom K–2 lesson combines seed observation with dissection and germination activities: How Does Your Garden Grow? The RHS also connects seed observation to plant growth and sowing in Sowing in pots.
Choose seeds children can handle
Seed size and ease of handling matter, especially with younger children. The RHS recommends peas, beans, sunflowers or nasturtiums for younger learners. For older children, it lists options including lettuce, chard, radish, poached egg plant and cornflower. Check the activity instructions and local growing conditions before choosing a species; the examples are not a guarantee that every seed will thrive in every classroom.

Watch germination and measure seedlings
Run a germination race
Have small groups sow seeds, label their containers and observe development on a regular schedule. Students can count seedlings or measure their height with a ruler, then record and compare results. The RHS Germination race activity focuses on germination, seedling-height measurement and recording observations.
Keep the comparison fair by using the same seed type and similar containers and care for each group, unless one of those conditions is the factor being investigated. A simple table in a notebook can track the date, visible changes and measurements.

Test one growing condition with dried seeds
Set up a store-cupboard investigation
Dried lentils, chickpeas, peas or mung beans can make a low-cost starting point for investigating how a growing condition matters. The RHS Store cupboard scientist activity suggests questions about light, water, planting depth or indoor versus outdoor growing. Choose one factor to compare and keep the others as consistent as practical.
- Choose one question. For example, compare seeds grown with different amounts of light.
- Prepare matching containers. Use small pots or containers with drainage holes and the same growing medium.
- Change only the chosen factor. Keep seed type, container and other care as similar as possible.
- Label every condition. Include the factor being tested so observations remain meaningful.
- Record changes. Note dates, germination and visible growth; measure if that suits the question.
- Review the observations. The RHS activity suggests evaluating results after three to four weeks.
Children may see variation between individual seeds, so the goal is to compare recorded observations rather than promise a particular outcome.

Plant a seed to follow its development
Make an egghead planter
Students can plant a seed in a rinsed eggshell and watch for changes. The National Agriculture in the Classroom lesson lists eggshells, markers, spoons, spray bottles and potting soil for its egghead starter activity. The same K–2 lesson, How Does Your Garden Grow?, is estimated to take two hours and includes seed observation, germination and plant starters. That estimate applies to the cited lesson, not to every classroom adaptation.
Use a pot or recycled container
A small pot or suitable recycled container can serve the same basic purpose. The essentials are a seed, growing medium, a way to provide water, and a place with appropriate growing conditions. Labels help students keep track of what they planted. The RHS Sowing in pots resource includes container sowing guidance.

Programs sometimes provide a bundled starter kit, but that is one approach rather than a requirement. Singapore’s National Parks Board says its Every Child a Seed programme has provided a plant starter kit annually to each Primary 3 student since 2013. The described kit includes a pot, potting mix, seeds and a plant journal; this is a Singapore-specific program, not a general classroom standard.

If students can care for plants over a longer period, connect the project to a class garden or greenhouse. Project Learning Tree describes classroom plant activities ranging from short projects to longer observations and a garden that can be moved outside in spring: Easy Plant Science Experiments for the Classroom. The U.S. Botanic Garden’s Greenhouse Manual is designed to help educators use greenhouse infrastructure in curricula and out-of-school activities.

Plan for the practical work as well as the observation: who waters the plants, where containers can sit, and what happens during weekends or school breaks. A small, manageable growing area may be more useful than a large project without a care routine.
Gather supplies without overcomplicating the project
Across these activities, the core materials are straightforward:
- Seeds suited to the activity, including dried beans or peas where appropriate
- Containers or small pots; recycled containers may work when suitable for planting
- Potting soil or compost for container growing
- Labels and a marker to identify seeds or conditions
- Watering equipment such as a spray bottle or other suitable container
- A hand lens for close observation and a small ruler for measuring seedlings, if useful
Paper towels, plastic wrap and rubber bands also appear among materials named for seed activities. Check the instructions for the specific setup before substituting materials. If you choose a seed-starting kit for classroom projects, treat it as a convenience: check how many seeds and containers it includes and whether labels or other needed components are supplied. No particular brand or kit is required by the activities described here.
Use published activity packs as another source of ideas
UK Research and Innovation and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council published a Seeds and plant growth discovery pack on 14 February 2014. It is intended for children aged 5 to 12 and contains 13 activities. Those figures describe that resource, not a recommended number of activities or evidence that a particular format improves learning outcomes.
