You can start composting yard waste with a simple pile or bin—no special system required. Combine dry “browns” such as leaves with “greens” such as grass clippings and vegetable scraps, keep the mix about as moist as a wrung-out sponge, and let air circulate. Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling; judge readiness by those signs, not by a calendar alone.

How composting works

Composting is managed decomposition: microorganisms break down organic material when they have oxygen, moisture, and a workable balance of browns and greens. Browns provide carbon and help absorb excess moisture; greens supply nitrogen and tend to be wetter. For more on the process and its controls, see the U.S. EPA’s overview of composting.

A backyard pile can be as simple as a designated spot where materials are layered and occasionally mixed. Choose a pile, a constructed bin, or an enclosed bin or tumbler according to your space and preference. Each can work; the right choice depends on how much material you have, how much effort you want to spend turning it, and how much access pests may have.

Choose a place and gather materials

Pick a spot you can reach throughout the year, with good drainage and a nearby water source. Sun or shade can both work. Keep a closed container handy for kitchen scraps and a dry supply of leaves, twigs, or other browns nearby. Break or chop large pieces into smaller ones so they decompose more readily. These are practical setup recommendations from the EPA’s home composting guide.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

What can go in a backyard compost pile?

Use suitable plant-based scraps and yard trimmings, and keep enough dry browns available to cover wet food scraps. The EPA recommends at least two to three volumes of browns for each volume of greens, and a 4–8 inch cover of dry leaves or other browns over food scraps. These are practical guidelines, not a laboratory-precise formula.

Category Examples
Browns Dry leaves, plant stalks, twigs, untreated wood chips, non-glossy uncolored shredded paper, brown paper bags, and cardboard without wax, tape, or glue.
Greens Fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds and paper filters, paper tea bags without staples, and crushed eggshells.

When starting a pile, lay down 4–6 inches of bulky browns such as twigs or wood chips. This base can help with airflow and absorb liquid. Add greens and browns in layers, cover food scraps with dry browns, and add water if the materials are dry.

Keep these out of a backyard pile

  • Meat, fish, bones, cheese and other dairy, fats and oils, and most cooked food. These can attract animals.
  • Compostable food-service ware and bags. Backyard piles may not reach conditions needed to break these materials down fully.
  • Herbicide-treated plants or grass, aggressive weeds with seeds, and diseased or pest-infested plants.
  • Treated or painted wood, pet waste and cat litter, dryer lint, glossy paper, and produce stickers.

Backyard piles generally do not get hot enough to fully decompose some materials. A commercial composting facility may accept certain items that should be excluded from a home pile, but check the facility’s rules before adding them to a collection bin.

How to maintain the pile

Check moisture, odor, and activity rather than following a rigid turning schedule. The mixture should feel like a wrung-out sponge: damp, but not soggy. Turning or mixing introduces air and can speed decomposition. Correct the likely cause when the pile is too dry, inactive, wet, or smelly.

  • Bad odor: The pile may be too wet or poorly aerated. Add dry browns and turn to introduce air.
  • Rodent concern: Cover food scraps with browns, exclude meat, dairy, and greasy food, and use a well-fitted lid. Where appropriate, a floor can help; EPA advises that gaps should be no larger than ¼ inch.

The EPA says a well-maintained backyard pile can reach 130–160°F. Its broader guidance describes 131–160°F as an optimal activity range and explains that pathogen reduction depends on sustaining temperatures for a method-specific period. A temperature reading alone does not show that the required time and temperature were reached throughout a casually managed pile, so do not assume it has sanitized every material.

When is compost ready?

Elapsed time varies with management. The EPA says a well-maintained pile may finish in about three to five months, while an untended pile may take about a year; these are approximate timelines, not guarantees.

Once it has stopped heating and visible scraps are gone, cure it for at least four weeks before use. Sift out woody pieces or other undecomposed matter and return suitable material to the active pile.

How to use finished compost

Finished compost can amend soil or serve as mulch in flower and vegetable beds, containers, window boxes, tree beds, indoor potting mixes, and on yard surfaces. For a soil amendment, the EPA’s home guide recommends incorporating 2–4 inches into the top 6–9 inches of soil. For surface mulch, it describes a 3-inch layer kept a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks. Adjust application to the planting and local soil guidance; do not use unfinished material as though it were mature compost.

Which composting option suits your situation?

Option Best fit What to consider
Open pile or constructed bin Outdoor space and a supply of yard trimmings. Simple setup; manage moisture and air, and consider how exposed the pile is to animals.
Enclosed bin or tumbler People who prefer a contained setup or want to limit pest access. Choose according to space and volume. Enclosure does not remove the need to balance browns and greens or monitor moisture.
Vermicomposting A separate worm-based method for suitable food scraps and a managed worm bin. The EPA identifies red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) as a commonly used suitable species; bedding and feeding are distinct from the pile method.
Municipal or community collection People without outdoor space or a suitable home setup. Availability and accepted materials vary; check local collection or drop-off rules.

A residential food-scrap grinder or dehydrator does not make compost by itself. The EPA describes it as producing a dried mixture that still needs to go into a composting system or an accepted collection route.

You can build a simple bin yourself; a purchased system is not essential. A garden fork can make turning easier, and a long-stem compost thermometer can help you observe heat, but neither is required. A thermometer reading alone cannot verify pathogen reduction. A sifter is also optional: the EPA describes a homemade screen made from ¼-inch hardware cloth.

Local rules and guidance

The recommendations here reflect U.S. federal household guidance. Local rules, collection availability, accepted materials, and climate-specific practices vary. Check your local program’s rules before sending scraps to curbside collection or a drop-off site. For additional details, consult the EPA’s home composting guide and overview of composting approaches.
