Sometimes—but a 60 Hz motor is not automatically safe or suitable on a 50 Hz supply. Compatibility depends on the motor type, nameplate voltage and connections, load, cooling and the manufacturer’s limits. For many general-purpose three-phase induction motors, 50 Hz operation calls for a corresponding reduction in voltage and available horsepower; running the motor at its original 60 Hz voltage can create an unsuitable volts-per-hertz ratio. Check the exact motor and driven equipment before connecting it.
What changes when a 60 Hz motor runs at 50 Hz?
Frequency sets a motor’s synchronous speed. At 50 Hz, that speed is five-sixths—about 83.3%—of its 60 Hz value. Actual induction-motor speed is slightly below synchronous speed and varies with load, so the ratio is a useful guide, not an exact RPM promise. Nidec explains the frequency relationship and the conditions for operating specified general-purpose polyphase motors in its 50 Hz operation guidance.
For those motors, Nidec says satisfactory 50 Hz operation requires appropriate reductions in voltage and horsepower. Its general guidance describes five-sixths of the 60 Hz voltage and horsepower ratings, with approximately the same rated-load torque and five-sixths synchronous speed. Because power depends on torque and speed, keeping torque at a lower speed means less horsepower is available. These relationships are not a universal rating for every motor or application.
Voltage must match frequency
Motor selection involves volts per hertz, not frequency alone. Keeping the 60 Hz voltage while lowering the supply to 50 Hz raises the volts-per-hertz ratio relative to the motor’s 60 Hz rating. Do not assume that a basic voltage converter or an arbitrary voltage setting makes the combination suitable. The supply voltage, motor connections and nameplate ratings must be considered together.

ABB/Baldor illustrates the relationship with a 1 hp, 230/460 V, 60 Hz three-phase motor: maintaining 460/60 volts per hertz gives about 383 V at 50 Hz. Its example anticipates five-sixths speed and five-sixths—or slightly more than 80%—of the 60 Hz horsepower output. This is a manufacturer illustration, not approval for an unspecified motor. See ABB/Baldor’s guidance on 50 Hz requirements.
Why there is no universal derating number
Lower frequency reduces speed, but the usable capacity also depends on the specific motor and its operating conditions. Nidec’s selection table applies to specified 2-, 4- and 6-pole drip-proof and totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motors. It lists different derating factors according to enclosure and voltage combination, and sends 8-pole applications to engineering. Its example voltage pairs include 230 V to 190/200/208 V, 460 V to 380/400/415 V, and 575 V to 475/500/520 V. Those are table examples for the stated motor categories, not a field rule for every installation.

The correct 50 Hz voltage and capacity for a particular motor must come from its applicable nameplate and manufacturer guidance. Nidec also notes that special-purpose and very small motors may differ from its general-purpose polyphase guidance. Consult the motor maker rather than treating five-sixths as a guaranteed horsepower rating.
Does the motor type change the answer?
Three-phase induction motors
The voltage, speed and horsepower relationships above apply to specified general-purpose polyphase induction motors. Confirm the exact motor’s 50 Hz rating and the driven machine’s needs; do not assume that a three-phase rule establishes compatibility for a different motor design.

Single-phase motors
Single-phase motors can have starting-system limits that do not follow the general three-phase guidance. Bodine warns that its 60 Hz split-phase motors and gearmotors should not be used at 50 Hz: the centrifugal cutout switch may not operate correctly, potentially damaging the start winding. Bodine also says that some of its 60 Hz permanent-split-capacitor (PSC) motors may run hotter and typically require a capacitor change and derating. These cautions apply to the named Bodine product categories, not automatically to every manufacturer’s motors. For those products, Bodine advises consulting its factory for a 50 Hz solution; see its FAQ.
Enclosure and cooling
Cooling can change with speed. Bodine notes that a TEFC motor’s shaft-driven fan runs more slowly at 50 Hz than at 60 Hz and therefore supplies less cooling. That makes enclosure and duty relevant to the decision; a motor that turns at the expected speed may still operate outside its thermal limits.

Check these points before using the motor
- Read the full nameplate. Record frequency, voltage, wiring or connection diagram, phase, current, horsepower or kilowatts, RPM, enclosure and any dual-frequency rating. A 50/60 Hz marking and its associated voltage ratings are more useful than a frequency label alone.
- Identify the driven load. Establish the required torque, speed and output power at the lower operating speed. Confirm that the machine and any transmission can work at that operating point.
- Ask the motor manufacturer to confirm the rating. For a general-purpose three-phase induction motor, confirm the appropriate 50 Hz voltage and capacity for that exact motor. For a single-phase motor, verify its starting system and capacitor requirements rather than applying the three-phase rule.
- Confirm the whole electrical arrangement. Check supply voltage, phase, motor connections and current protection together. Treat frequency-conversion equipment as part of the system to be assessed—not as a universal fix.
- Have a qualified person assess protection and commissioning. Follow the confirmed motor and equipment requirements, and check that the motor and driven machinery operate within their electrical, thermal and mechanical limits.
If the specific motor is not explicitly supported for the proposed supply and duty, do not treat the arrangement as approved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you choose a 50 Hz motor instead?
Consult the motor manufacturer or a qualified motor specialist if the nameplate does not establish suitability, the needed 50 Hz capacity is unclear, or the application depends on a particular speed or torque. If the existing motor cannot meet the load or cooling requirements at the altered operating point, select a motor rated for 50 Hz and the application. ABB/Baldor discusses selecting a larger motor when reduced 50 Hz horsepower would otherwise be inadequate, alongside checking machine speed and transmission requirements.

Selection should account for the motor type and nameplate support, correct voltage and protection, required torque and output, cooling and starting method, duty, and the mechanical limits of the driven equipment. A motor’s ability to turn is not proof that the complete installation is suitable. The NIH Office of Research Facilities likewise emphasizes checking motor and driven-machinery ratings when operating conditions change in its May 2020 bulletin on overspeed motors; that bulletin concerns overspeed rather than this specific 60-to-50 Hz case.
