A published collapsible-sawhorse plan offers a starting point, but the available description does not establish a complete cut list or exact dimensions. Use the plan’s own diagrams, dimensions and hardware instructions together; do not fill in missing measurements by guesswork.
What the available folding sawhorse plan specifies
Real Woodwork Plans’ collapsible sawhorse plan, dated July 27, 2026 (the page also displays July 11, 2026), describes a pair made with one 2×4 and a small amount of hardware. The publisher estimates 3–4 hours for the pair and suggests setting the legs 15–20 degrees from vertical. These are that publisher’s plan details, not independently verified material or time estimates, and the angle is not a universal standard.
The available description does not establish lumber grade, full bill of materials, cut lengths, hinge or bracket model, fastener sizes, or a tested capacity. Before cutting, obtain and follow the complete plan, including its drawings, cut list and hardware instructions. Do not infer dimensions from the general description or assume that any folding bracket will fit; compare a bracket’s geometry and required fasteners with the selected plan.
How to judge the folding mechanism
Angled legs can spread a sawhorse’s base, but the legs also need a way to stay in their working position. A hinge by itself should not be treated as a lock unless the chosen design shows that it positively retains the legs when open. Follow the plan’s specified mechanism rather than substituting hardware based on appearance.

Manufacturer instructions for separate commercial products illustrate the principle, not hardware compatibility with this wooden plan. Faithfull Tools’ instructions require its saw horse’s legs to be fully splayed and its sliding lock bolt tightened. That is a product-specific setup instruction; it does not establish that its mechanism is suitable for a DIY build.
Set up and inspect the sawhorse before use
- Place it on a level, stable surface. Manufacturer instructions for a separate sawhorse model specify a flat, dry, hard, level surface; use the selected plan’s instructions for your build.
- Open every leg fully and engage the plan’s leg-retention feature. Do not use a partly opened or unsecured sawhorse.
- Check that all feet contact the ground and that hinges, bolts, fasteners and locking parts are secure. Correct rocking or loose hardware before loading the horse.
- Keep the load within a capacity established for the specific design. Do not stand on a homemade sawhorse or use it as a step.
The user guide for a different sawhorse model likewise calls for fully extended legs, a locked cross brace and full foot contact, and warns against overloading, stacking or standing on that product. These are useful reminders about setup and use, not proof of the wooden plan’s strength.

Do not assume a load rating for a homemade build
No tested capacity is established for the wooden design described here. Strength depends on the actual lumber, geometry, joints, fasteners, leg-retention method, workmanship and how the load is distributed. A commercial rating cannot be transferred to a homemade build, even if the products look similar.
For context only, Faithfull lists a 150 kg maximum load for the product covered by its instructions. The cited user guide for another model states a 500 kg maximum capacity for that model. Neither figure rates this DIY design.

What to compare with a ready-made alternative
If you would rather buy than build, compare options by working height, folded footprint, how the open legs are locked, setup method, top features, support for your materials and the manufacturer’s stated load rating. Ratings and features apply only to the named product and model.
For example, DEWALT lists its DWST11155 as a metal folding sawhorse with a 2,000 lb capacity per pair, a 2×4 recess, V-grooves and top bars that can be clamped. Those are manufacturer specifications for that commercial model, not a comparison test or a capacity claim for a wooden sawhorse.

Kreg’s adjustable sawhorse project plan is another woodworking-plan reference, but it calls for two 24-inch wooden sawhorses and does not establish a folding design or a need for Kreg tools in this build.
