Flowers can send a message, but there is no universal flower dictionary. Meanings depend on the tradition, time, and setting: a red rose in a modern bouquet, for example, may draw on a different reference than a flower in a Victorian guidebook or a religious painting.
How the Victorian language of flowers developed
The familiar idea of a “language of flowers” is especially associated with the 1800s, when learning flower symbolism became a popular pastime. Flowers offered a way to express feelings that could not always be proclaimed publicly. Victorian guidebook writers drew meanings from religious and literary sources, folklore, analogies, and plants’ natural characteristics. The Smithsonian Gardens notes that meanings and traditions change over time and across cultures, and that a flower’s color could alter its message.
In examples collected by Smithsonian Gardens, bluebell represents kindness, peony bashfulness, rosemary remembrance, tulip passion, and wallflower faithfulness in adversity. Associations could be negative as well as positive. These examples describe a historical system, not a code everyone used or uses today.
What rose colors traditionally mean
The Royal Horticultural Society gives the following associations in its educational guide. Treat them as one traditional reference, not as fixed meanings shared by every culture or recipient.
#1 Best Overall
| Rose | Association in the RHS guide |
|---|---|
| Red | Eternal love |
| White | Truth and innocence |
| Pink | Admiration, joy, and gratitude |
| Yellow | Friendship and caring |
| Orange | Energy |
| Red and white together | Unity |
The same guide also associates roses more generally with love and good fortune. Its flower-symbolism guide lists other traditional pairings: daffodil with regard and chivalry; daisy with innocence; freesia with friendship; gladiolus with strength of character; lily with purity and modesty; lily of the valley with the return of happiness; sunflower with pure thoughts and adoration; and violet with faithfulness.
Why a flower’s meaning depends on its context
Flowers in Western art
In Western art, flowers can signal spirituality, display, fidelity, allegiance, innocence, or sensuality. In a Christian still-life context, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza discusses the white lily, iris, and columbine as symbolic flowers. The meaning belongs to the artwork’s setting and visual tradition; it is not necessarily the meaning a person intends when giving the same flower.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art also describes how a plant could carry varied or even conflicting associations in European painting. Carnations and roses, for example, could appear in religious, romantic, and nuptial settings. See its essay “Botanical Imagery in European Painting” and the Thyssen-Bornemisza’s “A walk among flowers”.
Floral motifs in 16th-century Ottoman culture
In its account of a 1560–65 Iznik dish, the Courtauld identifies tulip, carnation, rose, and hyacinth as the four principal “Quatre Fleurs.” In the Ottoman contexts discussed there, tulips had spiritual associations including divinity and modesty, carnations symbolized life and renewal, and hyacinths could evoke a beloved’s curls. These are specific cultural and artistic associations, not universal definitions. The Courtauld’s account of the Iznik dish explains the motifs in their setting.

Choosing flowers with their meanings in mind
Symbolism can add a thoughtful layer to a bouquet, but it cannot guarantee how the recipient will read it. If the message matters, consider the occasion and the recipient’s cultural references, and pair the flowers with a note that says plainly what you mean. Use a flower guide as inspiration rather than assuming every tradition assigns the same meaning.
