Choose flooring room by room: start with the room’s grade, moisture, sunlight and any radiant heat, then compare durability, comfort, cleaning, repairability and the full installed cost. Hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile and carpet each suit different priorities; check the exact product’s ratings, installation instructions and warranty before you buy.
Start with the room, not the material
A floor that performs well in a dry bedroom may be a poor fit for a basement or bathroom. Before comparing appearance or price, note the conditions the finished floor must handle.
- Grade: Is the room below, on or above ground level? Basements are more prone to moisture, so verify that a product is approved for the specific installation.
- Water exposure: Kitchens and bathrooms see spills and splashes. “Water-resistant,” “waterproof” and suitable for a wet room are not interchangeable guarantees; check the manufacturer’s definition, installation directions and warranty.
- Sunlight: Direct sun can fade or darken some flooring. Ask whether the product has relevant limitations or care requirements.
- Radiant heat: Some flooring products are incompatible with radiant heating. Confirm compatibility and any temperature or installation conditions for the exact product.
- Household needs: Children, pets, mobility needs, noise sensitivity and comfort preferences can change which trade-offs matter most.
Lowe’s flooring guide recommends matching flooring to room conditions and product-specific instructions; its guide was updated May 12, 2026. Read the guide.
Compare the main flooring options
Materials differ not only in appearance but also in construction, maintenance and how damage is handled. These are general characteristics, not guarantees for every product.

| Flooring | What it can offer | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Solid hardwood | Real wood surface with the potential to be sanded and refinished more than once. | Can scratch, often requires professional installation and needs careful attention to moisture and radiant-heat limits. Lowe’s author Holly Honeycutt notes: “Solid wood flooring is very durable, but in a home with kids and pets, scratches or deep lines are bound to happen.” |
| Engineered hardwood | Real wood surface over composite construction; some products may be suitable for concrete slabs or radiant heat. | The top wood layer limits refinishing compared with solid hardwood. Construction, finish, heat and moisture performance, and emissions vary by product. |
| Laminate | A layered wood-look option; click-together products can be relatively straightforward to install, and the retailer guide cites scratch resistance and comparatively low upkeep. | Confirm the exact product’s moisture rating. Excess moisture can cause buckling when the product lacks appropriate protection. It does not reproduce real wood or stone exactly. |
| Luxury vinyl plank or tile | Available in plank and tile formats; easy cleaning and water resistance are common features, and some products are marketed as waterproof. | Water performance depends on the product and installation. Some glued plank products can be difficult to remove cleanly. Check emissions information, room suitability and installation requirements. |
| Ceramic, porcelain or stone tile | Durable, generally low maintenance and often suitable for wet rooms; an individual damaged tile may be replaceable. | Heavy impacts can crack tile. It can feel cool and does not absorb sound like carpet. Project cost and installation requirements vary. |
| Carpet | Soft and warm underfoot, with sound-absorbing qualities. Padding and pile affect how it feels. | Can retain odors and stains and needs regular cleaning; it may be less suitable for some households with children or pets. |
Other choices include cork, bamboo, linoleum and concrete. The available comparisons do not establish equally detailed current guidance for each, so investigate the specific product’s room rating, installation method and maintenance needs rather than assuming a material-wide performance level. For material and indoor-environment considerations, see Building Clean’s flooring guidance.
Match flooring to your priorities
For a moisture-prone basement
Begin by confirming the room’s moisture conditions and the flooring manufacturer’s approval for below-grade installation. Do not infer wet-room or basement suitability from a generic “waterproof” label: ask what the claim covers, including seams, edges, subfloor preparation and installation. Check the warranty for exclusions that apply to below-grade spaces or moisture.

For kitchens and bathrooms
Prioritize products with clearly stated water performance and follow the specified installation details. Tile and some vinyl products are commonly considered for these rooms, but suitability depends on the product and the whole installed system, not just the material category. Account for comfort underfoot and the possibility of hard surfaces feeling cool.
For children and pets
Consider scratch and stain performance, ease of cleaning, sound and the consequences of visible wear. Solid hardwood can be refinished, but it can also scratch; carpet may be comfortable yet retain odors and stains. Compare the particular product’s surface, finish, cleaning directions and repair options against the household’s likely use.

For comfort and noise control
Carpet offers softness and absorbs sound. Tile is hard and may feel cool. These are meaningful differences for bedrooms, play areas and rooms where people spend long periods standing, but comfort is personal; samples viewed in a showroom may not convey how the floor feels in the finished room.
For easier repairs
Ask how a damaged area can be fixed before selecting a floor. Hardwood can often be refinished; individual tiles may be replaced. Some glued vinyl planks are harder to remove cleanly. For any option, find out whether matching replacement material is available and what repair work involves.

Compare upkeep, installation and total project cost
Routine cleaning is only part of ownership. Include periodic refinishing, product-specific care, subfloor work and the effort or cost of repairing damage. A material-only quote does not capture the full project: room size, preparation, location and labor affect installed cost. The Floor Coverings International materials guide also notes that project prices vary; there is no reliable universal price ranking by material name alone.
Installation method matters. Click-together laminate may be suitable for a DIY project, but that does not make the entire job simple: the subfloor, room layout, transitions and required accessories still matter. Some flooring is better left to a professional, especially where preparation or product-specific installation requirements are demanding. For technical background on comparing durability and maintenance, see the National Bureau of Standards publication Durability and maintenance as related to the selection of flooring; it is older material, not a current product specification.

Check emissions and product information
When indoor air quality is a priority, look for product-specific emissions disclosures and relevant certifications rather than relying on a broad material label. Building Clean recommends attention to low-emitting products and notes that laminate and engineered wood can contain formaldehyde. That guidance is not independent testing of a product, so review the manufacturer’s documentation and certifications for the item you are considering.
Quick Recap
Plan measurements and installation supplies
- Measure the room: Record the dimensions of each area and account for doorways and other features that affect layout.
- Confirm the product and method: Read the manufacturer’s installation instructions for subfloor requirements, underlayment, moisture conditions, expansion gaps and compatible tools.
- Include finishing pieces: Check whether the project needs transitions, mouldings or underlayment, and verify compatibility with the chosen flooring.
- Plan for waste and future repairs: Lowe’s advises buying extra flooring for mistakes and future repairs. The appropriate amount depends on the product and layout; use the manufacturer’s or installer’s guidance for your project.
- Use a kit only when it fits: A flooring installation kit can help with compatible floating flooring, such as some laminate or vinyl plank products. It does not replace subfloor preparation or the manufacturer’s directions.
A practical shortlist before you buy
- Is the product approved for this room’s grade, moisture exposure and heating system?
- What do its exact water, scratch, stain and wear claims cover?
- How will routine cleaning and repairs work, and can damaged sections be replaced or refinished?
- What installation method, subfloor preparation and accessories are required?
- What is the complete installed project cost, including preparation, labor and finishing materials?
- Are emissions information and certifications available for the specific product?
- Does the warranty cover the room and installation conditions you have?
