The best farm storage solution depends on what you are storing, how much you have, how long it needs to last, and how it will move from delivery or harvest to use. Bagged feed, bulk grain, hay, produce, machinery, and hazardous materials each need different protection. Start by matching the storage setup to the material—not by looking for one universal farm hack.
Plan around the material and the route it takes
Storage is part of the farm’s workflow. Map the path from delivery or harvest to storage and then to feeding, packing, or use. A location that protects supplies but blocks equipment access or adds repeated handling may create more work than it saves.
- Estimate the quantity and storage period, including seasonal peaks.
- Identify the main risks: water, ground moisture, pests, spoilage, sun exposure, theft, fire, or unauthorized access.
- Check how materials and equipment will be put away and retrieved, and whether the storage area leaves room for safe movement.
- For construction materials such as lumber, posts, and tubing, provide organized capacity for supplies used occasionally so they do not obstruct regular work.
NC State Extension’s farm-planning guidance emphasizes workflow, access, safety, and protecting stored materials. Its recommendations are general planning guidance, not crop-specific design specifications.
Choose hay storage by balancing loss, cost, and labor
Outdoor hay storage is especially sensitive to drainage and moisture coming up from the ground. The options below reflect Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s article, updated in November 2017. Its loss figures describe research findings, not a guaranteed result for every farm or climate.

Keep feed and grain protected without improvising bulk storage
Bagged feed
Store bagged feed where it is protected from moisture and separate from fuels and pesticides, as NC State Extension advises. Keep the route from delivery to storage and then to the feeding area practical, so moving feed does not create unnecessary handling or block access.

Bulk grain
Bulk grain calls for specialized bins and a rodent-control plan. Do not treat household bins or other improvised containers as a substitute for purpose-built bulk-grain storage. The cited NC State guidance does not provide grain moisture targets or bin-construction specifications; consult local Extension or a qualified technical professional for crop-, site-, and system-specific advice.
Design produce handling for the operation
A central sheltered place to receive crops and prepare them for market can be a useful starting point. Depending on the operation, that may be an open shelter or a facility that also supports washing, repacking, labeling, refrigeration, or processing. NC State Extension’s planning guidance describes these possible functions but does not set crop-specific temperature targets. Use crop-specific technical guidance when selecting refrigeration or handling conditions.

Clean and prioritize equipment before it goes under cover
Cornell Cooperative Extension advises cleaning machinery before storage: grain residues, hay, and chaff can provide food or shelter for rodents. Sunlight and moisture can damage tires, rubber and plastic parts, paint, bearings, and sheet metal.
When indoor space is limited, prioritize machines with substantial electrical components, high resale value, or greater sensitivity to the elements. Where possible, store machinery separately from hay—particularly in buildings that also contain a workshop—because a workshop accident can cause a major forage loss.

Treat fuels, chemicals, and manure as technical storage problems
Fuel and chemicals
Do not improvise storage for fuels or chemicals. NC State Extension identifies theft prevention, unauthorized access, applicable laws and regulations, worker safety, spill containment, fumes, fire, and temperature as design considerations. Follow the product label and seek advice that applies to the specific product and jurisdiction.
Manure
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service lists manure storage as a conservation practice, but its small-farm fact sheets are introductory; NRCS cautions against using them to implement practices without technical support. Site and system decisions therefore belong with qualified local technical assistance.

Check whether USDA storage financing fits
USDA Farm Service Agency’s article dated August 27, 2025, says the Farm Storage Facility Loan program covers eligible facilities and related equipment, including hay barns, cold storage, and drying or handling equipment. The article lists loan terms of three to 12 years, a maximum of $500,000 for storage facilities, and a maximum of $100,000 for storage and handling trucks; it also describes separate microloan details. These are program-specific terms reported on that date, not a guarantee of eligibility or current terms. Contact your county FSA office to verify requirements and availability.
“Protecting the quality of hay and length of time we can store it has increased the marketability and profitability of our hay production.”
That statement is an individual farmer’s reported experience, not a measured result that applies to every operation.
Make the final choice with farm-specific numbers
For any option, compare the upfront outlay with maintenance and expected service life, potential storage losses, labor to put materials away and retrieve them, fit with the volume and duration stored, access and workflow, space or equipment needs, disposal impacts, and safety or regulatory constraints. For site design, local compliance, grain requirements, and other technical questions, use the relevant local Extension or technical agency rather than adapting a general planning article into an engineered specification.
