For the quickest, least labor-intensive removal, hire a tree service to grind the stump. Grinding takes the stump below ground level but leaves most roots in place. Ask for a depth that suits what you plan to do with the area. If the stump is small and you can handle strenuous work, digging may be an option; if it is not in the way, letting it decay is slower but avoids immediate removal.
Choose a method based on what you need from the site
Before deciding how to remove a stump, consider how soon the space needs to be usable, the stump’s size, equipment access, the amount of ground disturbance you can accept, and whether the stump is sending up shoots. A stump in the way of construction or new landscaping calls for a different solution than one tucked into an unused corner.

Professional stump grinding is the fastest practical route
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes hiring an arborist to grind a stump as “the quickest, easiest, and safest way” to remove it. It is usually the clearest choice when the stump is large, the area needs to be cleared soon, or you are not comfortable operating heavy machinery. The trade-off is the service cost, which varies with stump size, access, requested depth, and location; the extension sources do not establish a general price range.
Match grinding depth to the next use
Grinding removes the stump below grade, not the complete root system. It can address the stump and large lateral roots, but smaller or more distant roots may remain. For turf, the Royal Horticultural Society says grinding 20–25 cm below ground is normally enough. For replanting or landscaping, it recommends at least 30 cm. These are RHS horticultural recommendations, not universal engineering specifications; confirm the depth with the contractor for your site and plans.

What to ask before booking
- What grinding depth is included, and can it be adjusted for the planned use?
- What access does the machine need, and are there limits caused by gates, slopes, or nearby structures?
- Which visible roots, if any, are included in the work?
- What happens to the grindings: are they left on site, removed, or used to fill the depression?
- Does the quote include any follow-up work needed to prepare the area for turf, planting, or construction?
Ask the tree service what excavation, utility-location, or other local requirements apply before work begins; rules and site conditions differ by location.
Hand digging can work for a small stump, but it is hard work
Digging is most reasonable when the stump is small, the surrounding ground can be disturbed, and you have the time and strength for strenuous work. An Ask Extension response dated 2023-04-18 says grubbing is arduous and that stumps larger than 15 inches are usually difficult for an average person to remove manually. That is a source-specific rule of thumb, not a guarantee about any individual stump: roots, soil, and access also affect the job.

- Expose the roots. Dig around the stump far enough to uncover accessible roots, taking care not to dig blindly where utilities or other buried services could be present.
- Cut the exposed roots. Use an appropriate pruning saw on reachable roots. Do not put yourself in the path of a moving or tensioned root.
- Work the stump loose. Continue exposing and severing roots rather than forcing the stump with unsafe leverage.
- Stop if the work or equipment exceeds your ability. RHS recommends safety footwear, thick gloves, and eye protection for DIY stump work. It says machinery such as winches or mini-excavators should be used only by people confident they can operate it safely.
Letting a stump decay is slow, but avoids immediate removal
If the stump is not a trip hazard, does not block access, and will not interfere with planned construction or planting, leaving it in place can be a reasonable low-effort choice. A stump can also be incorporated into the garden rather than treated as waste. Ask Extension notes that standing or decaying wood can provide habitat and food for birds, small mammals, fungi, and other organisms.
To encourage decay, the Ask Extension response suggests cutting the stump low, covering it with soil, and keeping the soil moist; drilling holes is an optional aid. This is not a quick fix. Oklahoma State University Extension says methods that rely on rotting can take months or years, depending on the tree species and conditions. Buried wood may also affect future planting or construction, so consider the eventual use of the space before leaving it.

Chemicals are not a quick way to remove stump wood
Stump-removal products do not liquefy a stump overnight. University of Illinois Extension discusses potassium nitrate as a treatment sometimes suggested to dry wood before burning, but notes possible harm to organisms involved in decay. Iowa State University Extension makes an important distinction: herbicide applied to the living cambium of a fresh stump may reduce resprouting, but herbicide is not beneficial for promoting stump decay.
Chemical use is therefore a separate question from getting rid of the wood quickly. Use a product only for a purpose allowed by its label and local rules. UK government guidance about chemical treatment of diseased trees or stumps is specific to disease control and regrowth prevention in the UK; it calls for appropriate training or certification for the work described and compliance with the product label, safety data sheet, and environmental precautions. It does not establish permission or instructions for household use in other jurisdictions.

Burning has serious safety and legal drawbacks
Burning is not a dependable shortcut. Iowa State University Extension warns that stump fires can burn for days and be difficult to control or extinguish; many local governments prohibit burning. University of Illinois Extension warns against pouring fuel on a stump because it can contaminate soil. Check local ordinances and current fire restrictions before considering any open burn, and do not assume a method allowed elsewhere is legal on your property.
