A Fibonacci gauge is a three-point layout aid that carries one chosen span into two smaller dimensions in a 1:1.618 proportion. Set its outside points to the dimension you want to divide, then use the middle point to mark the related spans. Treat the results as design starting points—not mandatory dimensions—and consult the complete plan for build measurements and steps.

How a Fibonacci gauge works

The gauge has two outside points and one point between them. When the outside points span a chosen length, the middle point divides that span into two parts related by the Golden Ratio. WOOD Magazine describes the proportion as 1:1.618 and says it remains the same as the gauge is spread wider or narrower.

That relationship can help you explore proportions for a furniture part or overall layout. It does not establish that a particular proportion will suit every design, use, or viewer; function, construction, and appearance remain the maker’s decisions.

How to use the gauge for a layout

  1. Choose the span to divide. Identify a dimension already established in your design, such as a tabletop width or the height of a panel.
  2. Set the outside points to that span. The outer points represent the full dimension you chose.
  3. Read the two subdivisions at the middle point. Use the resulting spans as proportional references when sketching or marking related dimensions.
  4. Review the design before cutting. Adjust the suggested dimensions to suit the project’s function, joinery, material, and overall appearance.

Woodpeckers’ instructions give these examples for its gauge: a 12-inch span divides into approximately 7.5 inches and 4.5 inches; a 24-inch span divides into 15 inches and 9 inches. These are examples from the manufacturer’s instructions, not independent test results.

Using the proportion in a woodworking design

A woodworking demonstration uses a Fibonacci gauge while laying out a small side table, presenting the suggested dimensions as rough guidelines for developing the design. That is a useful way to think about the tool: it can help generate related dimensions from a chosen span, but it cannot decide whether the resulting table size, overhang, or proportions are right for your project.

Try the gauge during the sketching stage, then check the dimensions against practical requirements such as usable surface area, stability, clearances, and the way the piece will be built. The ratio is a reference for exploring a design, not a substitute for those decisions.

What the WOOD Magazine plan includes—and what is not established

The WOOD Store lists Fibonacci Gauge and How to Use It Woodworking Plan as a downloadable plan featured in WOOD Issue 173, November 2006. Its listing says figured maple was used but that any wood will do, and names a table saw, drill, and other common workshop tools.

The listing excerpt does not provide the full dimensioned plan, complete build sequence, stock dimensions, fastener specifications, or a complete tool list. Do not infer those details from the short description; consult the full plan before beginning construction. The plan listing is the relevant source for its current format and availability.

Build a gauge or use a ready-made one?

The practical choice depends on whether you want to make the layout aid yourself and have the full project instructions, or prefer to use a ready-made gauge. Before starting a shop-made version, verify the complete plan’s dimensions and steps. If comparing ready-made tools, check that the tool provides the three-point proportional function you need; the Woodpeckers instructions document that use, but current stock and pricing are not established here.
