“Ephemeral blooms” can mean two different things: spring woodland wildflowers that flower before trees leaf out and then go dormant, or annual and biennial flowers that bring temporary color to a garden. Choose between them by matching the plants to your site, the time you can wait for flowers, and the kind of display you want.
What are spring ephemerals?
Spring ephemerals are woodland wildflowers that take advantage of the light reaching the forest floor before deciduous trees leaf out. They grow, flower, and set seed during that brief window, then their leaves die back and the plants commonly go dormant by midsummer. University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Gemini Bhalsod describes them as “in your garden one moment and gone another”; she notes that they are usually dormant by mid-summer. University of Illinois Extension, April 4, 2022
This seasonal disappearance is part of the plants’ life cycle, not a sign that the garden has failed. Spring ephemerals make sense in conditions that resemble their woodland habitat, where early-season light gives way to shade as the canopy fills in.
Which short-lived flowers can I grow?
First decide whether you want a woodland spring display or flowers that fill a sunny bed or patch. The groups differ in life cycle, preferred conditions, and how soon they are likely to flower.

| Plant group | Life cycle and display | Site and planning considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Spring ephemerals | Grow, flower, and set seed before the deciduous canopy leafs out; commonly die back and go dormant by midsummer. | Best suited to locally appropriate woodland conditions. Seed can be slow to establish because dormancy may need to be broken. |
| Annuals | Complete growth, flowering, and seed production within one growing year. Many flower within months of sowing. | Useful for seasonal color and temporary gaps. Many annuals prefer sunny sites, but temperature tolerance varies: warm-season annuals do not tolerate freezing, while cool-season annuals can withstand colder conditions. |
| Biennials | Generally grow in the first year, then flower and set seed in the second. | Plan for a two-season cycle rather than expecting the same quick display as many annuals. |
These life-cycle definitions follow the Royal Horticultural Society’s guidance on annuals and biennials. For examples, University of Georgia Extension lists trillium, wild ginger, bloodroot, and mayapple among cool-season wildflowers; these are regional habitat plants, not universal recommendations. The RHS names poppies, cornflowers, and foxgloves among familiar annual or biennial wildflowers. Check that any species is suitable for your location and obtain plants or seed responsibly.
How do I keep flowers blooming through the season?
Combine plants with different bloom times rather than expecting one short-lived group to flower all season. Cornell Cooperative Extension recommends a diversity of flowering species that bloom in succession from spring through fall. Spring ephemerals can provide an early woodland display; later-flowering plants can carry color forward, while annuals or biennials can fill temporary spaces. The right mix depends on your local sun, soil, moisture, and climate, so there is no universal planting calendar.

- For a woodland area: Use spring ephemerals where early light and later canopy shade suit them.
- For a sunny border or open patch: Consider locally suitable annuals or a meadow-style mix, checking the species’ light and moisture needs.
- For a naturalized look: Allow room for plants to develop and, where appropriate, set seed. Oregon State University Extension horticulturist Amy Jo Detweiler notes that “True wildflower patches will take on a natural, informal appearance in the garden.”
- For a more controlled display: Remove spent flowers when appropriate, or cut plants back to limit unwanted spread. Some annuals benefit from deadheading to encourage continued flowering.
Pollinator value also depends on the plants and the timing of their flowers. Spring ephemerals can provide early nectar and pollen to overwintering pollinators, including bumblebee queens, mining bees, sweat bees, early butterflies, beetles, flies, and gnats, according to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Annual wildflowers can provide food for butterflies, native bees, and hummingbirds, and some return when allowed to set seed, according to Oregon State University Extension. Choose locally appropriate species; ornamental hybrids or double flowers may offer limited pollen or nectar.
Can I grow wildflowers from seed?
Yes. Seed can be a practical route for annual wildflowers and meadow-style plantings, but establishment takes preparation and patience. Annuals and biennials are often easy to grow from seed, while spring ephemeral seed can be slower because dormancy may need to be broken. Buying established spring ephemeral plants may produce a display sooner, though any selection should still be suited to the local habitat.

Prepare an annual wildflower patch
Oregon State University Extension recommends this approach for annual wildflowers. Its timing advice is specific to western and eastern Oregon, so do not apply those dates elsewhere without checking local conditions.
- Choose a site: Select a sunny area with well-drained soil.
- Prompt weed seeds to sprout: Water the site for several weeks before planting.
- Remove the weeds: Clear the seedlings that emerge before sowing the flowers.
- Loosen the surface: Disturb only the top 2 to 4 inches of soil, reducing the chance of bringing deeper weed seeds to the surface.
- Sow a suitable mix: Choose seed appropriate to the site and region, and follow locally relevant sowing guidance.
Set expectations for a meadow-style planting
Before sowing a larger meadow, assess the site’s light and soil and select a mix that fits those conditions. Wildflower seedlings can be difficult to distinguish from weeds, so expect to monitor and manage the planting, particularly while it establishes. University of Georgia Extension cautions that garden-grown wildflowers are not maintenance-free: the first year or two can require attention, and some plants need pruning to shape them, encourage repeat flowering, or prevent unwanted spread.

What should I check before choosing plants?
- Region and climate: Species suitability, frost conditions, and bloom timing vary by location. Warm-season annuals cannot tolerate freezing temperatures, while cool-season annuals can handle colder conditions.
- Light and soil moisture: Match plants to the actual conditions in the bed or patch; a general “wildflower” label does not guarantee that a mix suits every site.
- Time to flowers: Many annuals can provide relatively quick color, biennials generally need two seasons, and spring ephemeral seed may take longer to establish.
- Desired style and upkeep: A naturalized patch may self-seed and look informal. Deadheading, pruning, or cutting back can shape the display, but the right approach varies by plant.
- Responsible sourcing: For spring woodland species especially, confirm local suitability and choose a responsible source rather than assuming a plant is appropriate everywhere.
For site selection and meadow establishment, consult University of New Hampshire Extension’s guidance on planting a wildflower meadow from seed. For annual flower temperature and maintenance considerations, see Virginia Cooperative Extension’s annual flower guidance. Let spring ephemerals complete their short season: Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife asks visitors to leave the flowers undisturbed, noting that seed production matters to the survival of plant populations.
