Start with the heater’s rating plate and owner’s manual. Dyna-Glo’s reviewed product listings identify fuel-specific models and state that conversion is not permitted; never use instructions or parts intended for a different fuel or model. Manufacturer product information
Before troubleshooting: identify the heater and fuel
Find the complete model number on the heater’s rating plate and confirm the fuel type. Match every check, cleaning direction, and replacement part to that model’s manual. The manufacturer’s listings include natural-gas-only and propane-only units; they do not establish that every Dyna-Glo wall heater has the same controls or repair procedure. Fuel conversion is not permitted on the reviewed models. Dyna-Glo product listings
The manufacturer also warns on the reviewed product pages that operation above 4,500 feet could cause pilot outage. This notice applies to those listed models, not necessarily every heater in the product line. If your home is at that elevation, consult your own manual or contact the manufacturer. Pilot lights, then goes out when you release the knob
A thermocouple problem is one possibility, but the manual lists several causes. Check these in order, using the exact hold time and procedures in your model’s manual. Owner-manual troubleshooting guidance Additional manual guidance

- Variable control knob offers the most customizable heat settings LOW - 10, 000 BTU MED - 15, 000 BTU HI - 20, 000 BTU

- The knob was not fully pressed or held long enough: Press and hold it as directed by the manual. The required time is model-specific.
- The equipment shutoff valve is not fully open: Check that it is fully open according to the manual.
- The thermocouple connection is loose: Snug the connection only as the manual directs.
- The thermocouple is damaged: Replacement may be appropriate after confirming the diagnosis and the exact model-specific part.
- The control valve is damaged or inlet pressure is too high: Do not attempt an improvised repair. Contact manufacturer support or the gas supplier, as appropriate.
Do not buy a generic thermocouple based on the symptom alone. Confirm the diagnosis, full model number, fuel type, and part compatibility in the manual or with GHP Group before ordering. Manufacturer product and support information
Pilot stays lit, but the burner does not start
The manual identifies a thermostat setting that is too low, a clogged or undersized burner orifice, and low inlet pressure as possible causes. Owner-manual troubleshooting guidance

- AUTO MODE - Fan automatically operates when the heater gets above 113 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s blowing ONLY warm/hot air

- For suspected low inlet pressure, contact the gas supplier or a qualified gas-heater technician rather than adjusting gas components yourself.
Heater shuts off during use
If the manual indicates that the ODS is operating, it lists insufficient fresh air, low line pressure, or a partially clogged ODS/pilot as possible causes. The ODS is a safety device; do not bypass or disable it. Owner-manual troubleshooting guidance
- Address ventilation: Open a window and/or door as the manual directs.
- Consider pressure: If the problem continues or low line pressure is suspected, contact the local gas supplier.
- Check pilot care instructions: Follow the cleaning directions in the care-and-maintenance section of your specific manual. If cleaning or repair is beyond those instructions, get qualified service.
Unusual odor or white powder residue
Odors can come from vapors produced by products such as paint, hairspray, or glue. The manual advises ventilating and stopping odor-producing products while the heater runs. A gas odor may indicate a leak or low fuel; follow the manual’s warning and leak-checking directions, or contact the gas supplier. Treat a suspected gas leak as a safety issue, not a routine troubleshooting task. Owner-manual odor guidance
