Pete’s Living Greens’ “still-growing” idea was to sell lettuce with its roots attached, then package the plant so people could harvest leaves over time. Its Living Strips Home Harvest Pack added a separate compartment for the roots, designed to contain them while keeping the countertop tidy.
How can lettuce still be growing in a package?
The concept starts with hydroponics: plants grow without soil, with their roots supported and supplied by mineral nutrients dissolved in water. A 2017 Make: profile described Pete’s lettuce as greenhouse-grown in California and packaged with its roots still attached. The plant is harvested, but the roots remain with the leaves rather than being trimmed away before sale.
That distinction is the point of the product. Instead of treating the lettuce as a fixed portion of cut leaves, the package presents a living plant from which a consumer can pull or cut leaves as needed. The company’s product rationale was that retaining roots could help extend shelf life in stores and at home and reduce produce discarded after purchase. That rationale was described in 2017 coverage; it is not a quantified independent food-waste finding.
What did the Home Harvest Pack add?
Pete’s Living Strips Home Harvest Pack put the root area in a separate compartment. FreshPlaza’s October 2017 description said consumers could harvest leaves while the roots stayed contained, a design intended to keep the growing portion out of the way and counters clean. The packaging was described as a recyclable plastic container.

- IMPORTANT: Please note that during times of extreme weather, live plants will suffer due to extreme temperatures. During winter, do not order live plants when temperatures are expected to go below 20F at the lowest point during the day. During summer, avoid ordering plants when temperatures are above 100F.
- You get 1 plants of about 3-5 inches in diameter. These are grown plants, ready to reproduce.
- They serve as natural biofilters to your pond, helping clear the water naturally.
- Please note that some of these plant ships with trimmed roots as sometimes they tend to fall off during transit due to heat. In case roots fall off upon receiving them, just place them in your pond and give them couple of weeks so they can re-establish themselves. If you live in areas experiencing above 90 temperatures, please make sure these plants are retrieved as soon as possible as extreme heat could kill these plants while in a box. AL, FL, SC, TX, WI, LA

What resource-use claims were made?
A Matthews Marking Systems case study describing Pete’s Living Greens says the company’s controlled greenhouse growing uses up to 85% less water and 70% less land than traditional growers. These are figures presented in that case study, which references a 2022 merger; they are not findings from an independent comparative study. “Up to” is important: the claim should not be read as a guaranteed saving for every crop or growing operation.
