A drawer pull jig helps you position and drill mounting holes consistently. Choose one that matches your hardware’s actual hole spacing and your drawer fronts, then follow the jig maker’s instructions before drilling.
What a drawer pull jig does
A drawer pull jig is a positioning and drilling guide for cabinet knobs and pulls. Depending on the design, it uses movable drill guides and measurement scales, a fixed pattern of holes, or a centering mechanism to locate holes on a drawer front. It helps repeat a chosen position across multiple fronts, but it does not determine the correct spacing for your hardware: measure the pull’s mounting holes and check its screw requirements first.
How to choose a jig
Compare the jig’s supported pull spacing and workpiece capacity with the hardware and drawer fronts you actually have. Check how it aligns to the drawer edge or center, whether it can be clamped, and whether its scales use inches, metric units, or both. For repeated work, consider whether the setup can be reset consistently across fronts. Also check the drill-guide material and whether a suitable bit is included.

- Check the hardware. Measure the distance between the pull’s mounting holes and confirm the screw requirements. Do not rely on the jig’s scale alone to establish the hardware spacing.
- Mark the position. Mark a centerline for the pull or knob on the drawer front.
- Set the jig against the drawer. Place the edge guide against the workpiece edge and align the marked centerline with the jig’s centerline window.
- Clamp the jig. Kreg’s manual advises, “Whenever possible, clamp the Cabinet Hardware Jig to the workpiece.”
- Protect the back face. Clamp scrapwood to the back of the drawer front to help prevent chip-out as the bit exits.
- Drill through the guides. The manual specifies a 3/16-inch (4.5 mm) drill bit. The product page calls for a 3/16-inch (5 mm) bit and says it is not included, so check the documentation supplied with your particular jig and bit before drilling.
Before drilling several drawer fronts
- Confirm that the jig’s spacing range or fixed pattern matches the measured hole spacing of the chosen pull.
- Use the same edge reference and centerline method each time; check the alignment before drilling each front.
- Make sure the jig is secure and that the workpiece is supported. Use the jig maker’s safety and operating instructions.
- Test the setup on scrap if you need to verify the position or fit before drilling a finished drawer front.
