Choose by starting with what the mesh must do—screen, filter, exclude, guard, ventilate, contain, or support—then specify its construction, clear opening, wire thickness, material, finish, and finished dimensions. The category name alone is not enough to identify a suitable product.
Start with the job, not the product name
Write down what needs to pass through the mesh and what must be kept out, contained, screened, guarded, or supported. Include the installation location and relevant conditions such as weather, temperature, and possible corrosion exposure. These details determine which construction and material are worth comparing.
Common applications can help narrow the options, but they are not engineering approval. A mesh described for guards, walkways, or enclosures is not automatically suitable for a particular load or safety-critical installation.
Compare the main wire-mesh constructions

Understand the dimensions before comparing listings
Clear opening
The clear opening is the open space between adjacent wires. It governs what can pass through and is often the key dimension for exclusion, screening, or particle separation. State the inside-to-inside opening; if openings are rectangular, give both dimensions. A listing’s nominal mesh count does not tell you the opening by itself.
Mesh count
For woven mesh, mesh size or count refers to openings counted per linear inch from wire centers. It is a count, not the clear aperture. WireMesh Sourcing’s specification charts distinguish mesh size from opening and wire diameter.

Wire diameter or gauge
Wire diameter describes the wire’s thickness. Give an actual diameter with units where possible; gauge references can vary, so gauge alone may not identify the thickness you intend. Mesh count, clear opening, and wire diameter describe different things and should not be used as substitutes for one another.
Open area
Open area is the proportion of the mesh face that is open. It can matter for airflow, filtration, or screening. If it affects your application, state the desired open area along with the opening and wire dimensions rather than assuming it from mesh count alone.

Choose material and finish for the installation environment
Possible materials include carbon or galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and other alloys; finishes or coatings may also be available. The right choice depends on where the mesh will be installed and the conditions it will face. Tell the supplier about climate, temperature, moisture, and corrosion exposure, and identify any relevant alloy or finish requirements. Without those project details, no one material or coating can be recommended universally.
For household or garden work, hardware cloth may be a useful category to compare. WireMesh Sourcing describes small-opening welded hardware cloth in galvanized, PVC-coated, and stainless forms, with square openings from 1/8 to 1 inch, for uses including rodent exclusion, screening, vent guards, and garden protection. Those are supplier-described product examples, not universal dimensions or a guarantee of suitability. Check the actual listing’s opening, wire thickness, coating, and roll or sheet size against your needs.

Prepare a complete specification before requesting a quote
- Describe the application and site. State what must pass through or be excluded, contained, screened, guarded, or supported, and note climate, temperature, and corrosion exposure.
- Name the construction and opening shape. Indicate woven or welded mesh, or specify expanded metal or perforated sheet where appropriate. Give square, rectangular, or other required opening geometry.
- Give the dimensions that control performance. Specify clear opening, both opening dimensions if rectangular, wire diameter or gauge with units, and mesh count where applicable. Include desired open area if relevant.
- Identify material and finish. State the primary material, any required alloy or grade, and coating or finish.
- Specify the finished form. Give roll or sheet dimensions, quantity, and any trimming, edge treatment, framing, fabrication, tolerance, or accessory needs.
This checklist follows the ordering details in McNICHOLS’ wire-mesh specifying and ordering guide. If a requirement is unknown, say so when requesting a quote rather than allowing a supplier to assume it.
When a product listing is not enough
The right choice cannot be finalized from “wire mesh” alone when the load, target particle or pest, installation method, site exposure, jurisdiction, or required standard is unknown. For structural, safety-critical, food-contact, or regulated uses, confirm the exact project requirements and review the manufacturer’s or supplier’s documentation before purchase. Treat general application descriptions as starting points; verify that the offered product meets the requirements of the actual installation.
