To drill a hole where you marked it, make the center mark precise, secure the workpiece, align the bit with the mark, and check the hole as it starts. The right method depends on the material and the accuracy you need: a center punch helps locate a hole in metal, while a drill guide or a properly set up drill press can help control a hand drill or keep a hole perpendicular.
Define what “the right place” means
Decide what the hole must line up with: an edge, a centerline, another hole, or a mating part. Measure from stable reference edges and use the same references throughout. Placement, the angle of the hole, its diameter, and whether the workpiece moves are separate sources of error; solving one does not automatically solve the others.
For ordinary layout, intersecting lines and a carefully placed mark may be enough. For closer-tolerance work, machining guidance recommends more precise references and tools such as a surface plate, surface gauge, calipers, and sharp scribes. Smithy describes precision layout procedures as capable of targeting “within a few thousandths of an inch”; that is a layout target, not a guarantee of the finished hole’s position.
Mark and verify the center
For metal
Draw two fine lines that cross at the intended center. Make a light prick-punch mark at the intersection, check its position, then deepen it with a center punch to give the drill point a seat. The U.S. War Department’s historical TM 10-590 manual puts the check plainly: “Check to make sure the prick punch mark is located exactly where the lines cross.” Smithy also recommends checking the punch mark against the line intersection, using magnification when precision calls for it.

A center punch is not suitable for every material: striking it can damage or deform some workpieces. Choose a marking method appropriate to the material rather than applying the metal procedure indiscriminately.
For wood
Mark the center clearly and use a bit suited to the operation. For one woodworking task—drilling from opposite edges—Wood Magazine describes using a brad-point bit and checking that the drill press bores perpendicular to its table. That example is not a universal bit recommendation for all woods or materials.

Secure the work and choose a way to control the drill
Using a drill press
Clamp the workpiece so it cannot shift. MIT’s workshop instructions advise placing the intended hole directly under the chuck; a centerfinder can be placed in the punch dimple to align the spindle with the mark before drilling. A drill press can help maintain a perpendicular hole when the setup is aligned and the work is securely held.
Using a handheld drill
Hold the drill so the bit meets the surface at the intended angle, and clamp the workpiece rather than trying to steady it by hand. A portable drill guide can help a hand drill start on the mark and control its angle. Kreg describes its KDG-6000 guide as having a grip surface intended to help keep the guide in place as the hole starts, and its Drill Guide Pro page describes angled drilling. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent accuracy tests; a guide does not establish a machining-level tolerance.

Start the hole and check its position
- Seat the bit point. Bring the drill to the work with the point aligned in the mark or dimple before starting.
- Begin with control. Apply controlled pressure and keep the drill aligned. For a drill press, MIT notes that a center drill is stiff enough not to deflect significantly when starting a hole; bit choice still depends on the material and operation.
- Inspect while correction is still possible. In the historical manual’s metal procedure, the emerging impression is checked against the layout lines while it is still at the starting stage. If the mark and developing hole do not agree, stop and reassess the setup rather than continuing and enlarging the error.
- Continue only when the start is correctly located. Follow the instructions for the drill and bit, and use safe practice appropriate to the material and equipment.
TM 10-590 describes a particular correction for brace drilling using a round-nose chisel. That equipment-specific historical procedure is not a general correction method for modern drills, drill presses, or every material.
Match the method to the job
| Need or setup | Useful approach | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Locating a hole in metal | Crossed layout lines, a checked prick-punch mark, then a center punch | Punching can damage or deform some materials; choose a material-appropriate mark. |
| Handheld drilling | A portable drill guide can help the bit start on the mark and control angle | Manufacturer descriptions do not establish independent accuracy results or machining tolerances. |
| Perpendicular holes when the work fits | A drill press with the work clamped and the mark aligned under the chuck | The setup must be aligned; the workpiece must be held securely. |
| Close-tolerance layout | Use reliable references and precision layout tools such as a surface plate, surface gauge, calipers, and sharp scribes | A precise layout target does not guarantee the finished hole’s location. |
| Angled or opposite-edge drilling | Choose a guide or machine setup suited to the direction of the hole; woodworking examples may use a brad-point bit in a checked drill press | The cited examples address particular tasks, not one universal jig or bit choice. |
Use material-specific cutting guidance
The historical government manual mentions oil for its metal-drilling procedure and easing pressure as the drill approaches breakthrough. Cutting-fluid needs and breakthrough technique depend on the material, bit, and equipment, so follow current manufacturer instructions for the tools and workpiece rather than treating that historical direction as universal.
