A Watts-style drill makes a nearly square hole by combining a specially shaped cutter with a mechanism that guides its motion. It is not an ordinary twist bit that cuts a perfect square on its own: the corners remain rounded, and the tool’s guide or drive arrangement is essential.
How does a Watts drill make a square hole?
The cutterhead is based on a Reuleaux triangle, a curved shape formed from arcs based on an equilateral triangle. It has constant width. When the cutter rotates while constrained by a square guide, its motion traces an outline close to a square. Cutting edges on the head remove material along that path.
The outline is not a mathematical square: the corners are rounded. A Gresham College lecture transcript dated October 11, 2022, says a described Reuleaux-triangle bit covers “over 98% of the square.” That figure applies to the bit discussed in the transcript, not to every Watts-style tool, material, or hole.
Why the cutter needs a guide or special drive
The Reuleaux-triangle shape explains the cutter’s geometry, but the shape alone does not make the tool work. The cutter must move in a controlled way relative to the workpiece.

Square guide and floating drive components
Earlier guided arrangements use a square guide and floating drive components to constrain the cutter while it turns. The square guide helps shape the cutter’s path; the drive components accommodate the motion needed to keep it turning within that constraint.
Planetary-gear arrangement
A later design described in US patent US4074778A, issued February 21, 1978, uses a planetary gear drive and counter-rotating motions. Its abstract says: “The composite effect of these two counter revolutions when considered with the shape of the cutterhead is that the cutting bits transcribe and cut out a square hole.” This is the patent’s description of that particular mechanism; it should not be taken to mean every square-hole drill uses planetary gearing.

What holes can these tools cut?
The design determines the intended material and the tool’s compatible setup. A patent for a wood-oriented square-hole drilling bit, US2652084A, published September 15, 1953, describes use in wood, plastic, and similar materials, and distinguishes its design from devices for metal. That stated scope belongs to that patent’s bit, not to all square-hole cutters.
Before choosing a square-hole drill bit for mortising, check the particular tool’s cutter geometry, required guide or drive, compatible machine, intended material, and supported hole size and depth. The cited patent descriptions establish that designs differ; they do not provide a current product comparison or cross-model test results.

What “square” means in practice
A Watts-style arrangement can produce a nearly square opening without chiseling every corner, but it does not leave sharp internal corners. If a project requires truly square corners, the cutter’s rounded-corner result may need additional finishing with a chisel or another suitable method. The amount of finishing depends on the cutter and the required fit.

The patent record includes an early square-hole drill, US1212634A, published January 30, 1917. The later US4074778A patent discusses earlier Watts and Powell designs and describes its planetary drive in relation to the guided, floating-chuck approach.
