Drying Firewood in Winter: How to Store Wood and Check It’s Ready to Burn

Winter can preserve seasoned firewood, but freezing weather is unreliable for drying green wood. Store it with airflow and verify moisture with a meter.

Firewood can stay protected and dry through winter, but in freezing weather green wood may barely season at all. Split and stack it for airflow, keep precipitation off the top, and check moisture on a freshly split face before burning. A calendar or cracks in the log ends cannot confirm that wood is ready.

Can firewood dry in winter?

It depends on temperature and conditions. In freezing climates, winter is generally better for preserving already-seasoned wood than for drying green wood. The Alaska Boreal Forest Soils Lab says, “Little to no drying occurs when daily temperatures are below zero, even though it’s very dry out” (Alaska Boreal Forest Soils Lab, “Drying and Storing Firewood”).

Above-freezing periods may allow some drying, but winter should not be treated as a reliable seasoning season in cold regions. Split size, species, airflow, precipitation, humidity, and temperature all affect how quickly wood dries. Kentucky guidance recommends at least six months of air drying, while Cornell says getting below 20% moisture can take at least six months—and longer in shade, damp locations, or with slower-drying hardwoods. These are planning guides, not guarantees (University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources, “How to Dry Firewood”; Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Storing and Drying Firewood”).

What Alaska’s seasonal observations show

University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension reported these drying durations for paper birch and white spruce from observations collected in 2022 and 2023 and published in 2025. The extension cautions that weather varies from year to year, so periods may be longer or shorter (“Drying Firewood in Interior Alaska”).

Harvest timing Paper birch White spruce
Before snowmelt 102 days 126 days
After green-up 67 days 63 days
Midsummer 316 days 298 days
After freeze-up 382 days 292 days

These are observations for two species in Interior Alaska, not a schedule to apply elsewhere. They show why harvest date alone cannot predict when a household’s wood will be ready.

How do I keep firewood dry in winter?

  1. Cut it to usable length and split it. Split wood exposes more surface area to moving air; whole rounds generally dry more slowly.
  2. Stack it loosely. Leave gaps between pieces so air can circulate rather than packing the pile tightly.
  3. Raise it above the ground. Use a rack, pallets, or lumber such as two-by-fours to reduce contact with wet soil.
  4. Cover the top, not the sides. A tarp or rigid cover should shed rain and snow while leaving the sides open to airflow. Cornell notes that in its Northeast context protection from precipitation can matter more than sun exposure.
  5. Place the pile away from buildings. Kentucky and UAF advise against storing firewood beside the house or other structures. Follow local fire-setback rules, which may be more specific than general guidance.

Keep the main supply outdoors. Bringing a large quantity of green wood indoors can add moisture to the home and attract wood-associated insects. Bring inside only a practical near-term amount, while following appliance instructions and local fire-safety advice (Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources; UAF Cooperative Extension).

General Tools MMD4E Moisture Meter for Wood, Walls & Water Leak Detection
  • HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
  • WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. Low, medium and high moisture tones and on-screen icons, Reading HOLD button
  • MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a “9V” battery.
  • MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.
  • GENERAL TOOLS: We're a recognized leader in designing and developing specialized precision tools dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service. We encourage artisans and DIYers to work smarter, measure better, and repair more productively.

Should I cover my woodpile?

Yes: cover the top to keep rain and snow off, and leave the sides open. Enclosing the pile tightly can restrict the airflow needed for ordinary air seasoning. Plastic wrapped tightly around wood for solarization is a distinct method, not the same as a normal top cover; it should not be confused with the recommended open-sided setup for a winter woodpile.

How can I tell if firewood is dry enough to burn?

Use a wood moisture meter and aim for 20% moisture or less as a practical ready-to-burn target. Split a representative log and measure promptly on the newly exposed face, then sample pieces from different parts of the stack. Do not measure frozen wood: the Alaska Boreal Forest Soils Lab warns that frozen wood can give an unreliable reading. End checks or cracks alone do not establish that a log is dry enough (Alaska Boreal Forest Soils Lab; Cornell Cooperative Extension).

RDINSCOS Replaceable Pins Moisture Meter
  • FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
  • CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
  • PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
  • ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.

Kentucky guidance says firewood below 25% moisture is more efficient. That broader efficiency threshold is not the same as the more conservative 20%-or-less target used here for deciding whether wood is ready to burn (University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources, “Drying Firewood”).

Why does moisture matter?

Wet wood uses some of its heat to evaporate water, leaving less useful heat for the home. Kentucky extension guidance also warns that unseasoned wood can smolder and contribute to creosote buildup. Creosote can increase chimney-fire risk, but that does not mean every fire using damp wood will cause a chimney fire. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions and keep up with appropriate chimney maintenance (Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources, “How to Dry Firewood”; “Drying Firewood”).
