The common coffee table mistake is choosing one for its looks before checking whether it fits the sofa, the clearances and the way the room is used. Measure first; then choose a shape, style and material that work in your living room.
Measure the sofa before choosing a table
Get the height and length
Measure the sofa cushions from the floor and the sofa from end to end. Gabrielle Savoie’s MyDomaine guidance, updated November 21, 2025, recommends a coffee table at cushion height or one to two inches lower, and about two-thirds the sofa’s length. For a 96-inch sofa, that works out to a table around 64 inches long. These are practical proportions, not universal standards. MyDomaine’s coffee table guide gives the recommendations and example.
Check the width and walking space
Measure the distance from the sofa to the TV stand or fireplace. The MyDomaine guide suggests leaving 12–18 inches between sofa and table, and 24–30 inches between the table and TV stand or fireplace. It also offers a width estimate: subtract 42 inches from the sofa-to-TV-stand distance. Treat these as starting points to test in your own room, not building or safety codes; the right fit depends on your furniture and circulation needs.
Before ordering, mark the table’s proposed footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or paper. Check that you can sit down, stand up and walk around it comfortably, and that doors, drawers or other furniture remain usable.

Choose a shape that fits the room
Once the dimensions work, choose a shape that suits the sofa and the available floor area. Rectangular tables often follow the line of a longer sofa; square tables can work with a compact or sectional arrangement; round and oval tables soften the layout and avoid sharp corners. These are design options, not fixed pairings: use the taped footprint to judge how each shape affects movement.

Consider visual weight as well as measurements. MyDomaine suggests that a sofa with high, slender legs can pair with a visually heavier table, while a sofa with no visible legs may look balanced with a table on higher, slender legs. Use that as a styling prompt, not a rule: the table should feel proportionate in the whole room, including nearby furniture and floor space.

Match the table to daily life
- Need to clear clutter? Look for storage for remotes and other small items.
- Use the table for games or gatherings? Prioritize a comfortable, usable surface.
- Put your feet up? An ottoman may suit the room better than a hard-surface table.
- Have small children? Consider rounded or otherwise non-sharp edges; MyDomaine advises avoiding glass in this situation.
- Want a visually lighter option in a small room? The guide mentions lucite as one possibility.
- Finding wood difficult to coordinate with medium-toned hardwood floors? Marble or travertine are alternatives mentioned in the guide.
