Marimo moss balls are living freshwater algae—not moss—and their soft green spheres make them an unusual aquatic companion. Their best-known wild form comes from Lake Akan in Japan, where the algae gather into large balls under conditions that are different from a home aquarium.
What is a marimo moss ball?
“Moss ball” is the familiar common name for marimo, commonly identified as Aegagropila linnaei. The Japan Tourism Agency explains that this filamentous algae can grow in different forms: filaments may radiate outward or gather into a ball. The spherical shape is one growth form, not a separate kind of moss.
Why are marimo famous in Japan?
Lake Akan is notable for its large, naturally formed marimo. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment says it is the only confirmed place in Japan where fist-sized or larger marimo grow, with these balls found in two areas of the lake. The lake’s water conditions contribute to their formation, and clusters in its northern part are designated a National Natural Monument. Conservation work also includes protecting the watershed.
Lake Akan’s marimo have an environmental story as well as a distinctive shape. The University of Tokyo’s 2022 account of research on wild populations says lake ice and snow shield them from intense winter sunlight. The researchers studied how marimo respond to cold and high light; they raised concern that reduced ice cover could increase exposure. These findings concern Lake Akan and specific research conditions, not a proven prediction for every marimo or aquarium.

How do I care for a marimo moss ball?
Aquarium retailers commonly recommend clean water and low or indirect light, while advising against direct sunlight. Treat this as practical hobby guidance, not a single official standard: care depends on the container and setup, and retailer recommendations differ. A marimo is alive, so “low maintenance” does not mean no attention.
- Use clean water and follow care directions suited to your particular setup.
- Choose low or indirect light rather than placing the container in direct sun.
- Check the seller’s care instructions and species identification before buying; “moss ball” alone does not confirm the species.
How fast do marimo grow?
The University of Tokyo reported an approximate natural marimo ball growth rate of 5 millimeters per year and said marimo can live for centuries. Those figures describe the algae in its natural-history context; they are not a growth guarantee or lifespan promise for a purchased specimen.

Can I buy or transport a marimo moss ball?
Before buying a live ball, check the stated species, seller’s sourcing information, described size and condition, and care instructions. A trade name is not proof that a specimen is Aegagropila linnaei or that it came from Lake Akan. Do not assume a product is a wild Lake Akan marimo without documentation.
Rules for live organisms vary by destination. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment explains that species designated under its Alien Species Act can face restrictions on keeping, cultivation, transport, import and release; that general guidance does not establish that every marimo listing or shipment is covered. Check the current rules where you live and where the specimen will travel before ordering or moving it.
