Dike It to Dam It: How Furrow Diking Captures Water in Crop Fields

Furrow diking forms small barriers in crop furrows to hold water briefly. USDA cotton studies reported reduced runoff and irrigation use in specific conditions, not universal results.

Furrow diking is a farm tillage practice that makes small barriers or basin-like depressions in the furrows between crop rows. The barriers hold rain or irrigation water briefly so more can soak into the soil instead of running off. USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) cotton studies found lower runoff and irrigation use in specific settings, but their results are not a universal forecast for other crops, soils, or regions.

What furrow diking does

A furrow diker, also called a furrow dammer, forms small earthen dams across crop furrows. These interruptions slow water moving down a row and create temporary ponding. The aim is to give water more time to infiltrate near the crop rather than leave the field as runoff.

ARS describes equipment that can attach to common cultivation equipment. A furrow diker is therefore a field implement, not a permanent drainage structure: its usefulness depends on the crop layout, field conditions, existing machinery, and how the barriers fit with later field operations.

What the cotton studies found

The reported benefits come from particular cotton studies, not a guarantee that diking will save a set amount of water or preserve yield in every season.

Evidence Reported result Study context
USDA ARS research-news summary, 2009 In a moderate-drought study, diking saved 1 inch of irrigation water per acre and reduced runoff by 28%. Cotton; the summary reports the result for that study’s conditions.
USDA ARS research-news summary, 2009 In the following, more severe drought year, diking saved 5 inches of irrigation water per acre. Cotton; a different drought year from the moderate-drought result.
USDA ARS research-news summary, 2009 In one of three years, growers reduced irrigation by one-third while maintaining the same yield as traditionally tilled cotton. The one-third reduction and unchanged yield applied in one year of the comparison, not all three.
USDA ARS abstract, 2007, describing a 2006 field study Runoff and sediment yield were reduced by 3.5 times; infiltration increased by 38%. Irrigated cotton near Dawson, Georgia, on Faceville loamy sand. The study compared diked and non-diked conventional tillage and included simulated-rainfall plots measuring 2 by 3 metres, with three replications.
USDA ARS abstract, 2007, describing a 2006 field study Estimated plant-available water was 7.1 days for diked plots versus 3.9 days for non-diked plots. The same Georgia field-study context; these are reported estimates, not a general duration for other fields.

ARS also recorded a 2011 proceedings paper on furrow diking and the economic water-use efficiency of irrigated cotton in the southeastern United States. That publication record establishes the paper’s subject and bibliographic details, but does not by itself establish additional effect sizes.

How to judge whether it fits a field

The cited findings do not establish universal thresholds for when furrow diking is worthwhile. A local evaluation should consider how the practice would perform in the particular field and whether its benefits justify equipment and operating costs.

The durable coating increases weather resistance and longevity while maintaining a clean, sleek appearance through repeated use. The size is 60 in wide
  • PACKAGE & INSTALLATION- Includes one snow plow blade and all required assembly hardware (screws, nuts, and washers). Mounting hardware is not include. Basic assembly instructions are provided, and manual screwing is required. Note: Some models may require drilling during installation
  • Crop and location: The quantified examples here concern cotton, including a study in Georgia; they do not establish outcomes for every crop or region.
  • Soil, slope, and runoff: Consider whether water tends to run off and whether the field’s soil and slope make temporary ponding appropriate.
  • Water supply: Distinguish rainfed production from irrigated production. The reported irrigation savings apply to specific irrigated-cotton circumstances.
  • Results that matter: Assess water captured, runoff and erosion, yield, and net return together rather than treating one measure as proof of profitability.
  • Field operations and machinery: Check implement compatibility with existing cultivation equipment and how dikes will be managed for later operations. The cited sources do not establish current model compatibility, prices, or a universal equipment setup.

Equipment and practical limits

The relevant equipment category is a tractor-mounted furrow diker or dammer. The 2011 Successful Farming article reported that such equipment could be purchased from manufacturers or built in farm machinery shops, while ARS describes equipment attachable to common cultivation equipment. These descriptions do not identify current models, prices, or compatibility with a particular tractor or cultivator. Confirm fit and field requirements before selecting an implement.

The original Successful Farming article, “Dike It to Dam It,” by Dave Mowitz, was published January 25, 2011. Its additional Texas High Plains yield and payback figures are historical claims reported in that article and are not independently established by the ARS findings summarized here; they should not be treated as current estimates.
