BR30 and E26 describe different parts of a light bulb, so they are not competing bulb types. BR30 identifies a reflector shape and nominal size; E26 identifies the screw-in base. A bulb can be both. To choose one for a fixture, match the base and check the bulb’s dimensions, electrical requirements, light output and dimmer compatibility.
What do BR30 and E26 mean?
BR30 describes the bulb’s shape and size
The “BR” refers to a bulged reflector bulb, designed to direct a broad wash of light. Reflector bulbs are commonly used in recessed can lights, according to Philips Hue’s bulb-size guide. The “30” indicates a nominal diameter of 30/8 inch, or 3.75 inches. Actual product dimensions can vary: Philips Hue lists a typical BR30 diameter of 3.75 inches and height of 5.2 inches, while one LEDVANCE/Sylvania BR30 incandescent bulb is listed at 3.75 inches in diameter and 5.38 inches long.
E26 describes the base
E26 is a medium Edison screw base—the part that connects the bulb to the socket and power source. It is common in North American household fixtures, including ceiling fans and reading lamps. That regional description should not be assumed to apply worldwide.
Can a bulb be both BR30 and E26?
Yes. The labels describe separate characteristics, so a BR30 bulb can have an E26 base. For example, Signify lists a Philips BR30 LED bulb with an E26 cap-base. Its specifications are 120 V, 8.8 W, 650 lumens, 5000 K, and a nominal 110-degree beam angle; those figures apply to that particular model, not to every BR30 or E26 bulb. The listing also gives it a nominal life of 15,000 hours and says it is dimmable only with specific dimmers: Signify product listing.

How to check whether a BR30 bulb fits your fixture
An E26 base may fit an E26 socket, but the BR30 and E26 labels alone do not establish that a bulb is suitable for a particular fixture. Check these points before replacing a lamp:
- Match the base to the socket. Read the fixture label or existing bulb marking. An E26 bulb requires an E26 socket.
- Check voltage and fixture rating. Confirm the candidate bulb’s voltage and wattage against the fixture’s stated requirements and maximum rating.
- Measure clearance. Check the fixture opening and available depth. A BR30’s diameter and length matter even when its base fits. Compare the bulb’s listed dimensions with the actual space.
- Choose the light you need. Compare lumens for light output and color temperature for the appearance of the light. For LED bulbs, wattage alone does not tell you brightness.
- Consider beam spread. For directional lighting, compare the beam angle and intended application with what the space needs.
- Verify dimmer compatibility. Check the bulb maker’s compatibility information for the installed dimmer; dimmability does not guarantee compatibility with every dimmer.
- Follow fixture instructions. For enclosed or damp locations, use the fixture manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming every bulb is suitable.
Examples: same shape and base, different bulb specifications
These manufacturer-listed examples show why shape and base do not tell you a bulb’s technology, brightness or color. They are specific products, not universal specifications.

| Example | Base and dimensions | Electrical and light specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Philips BR30 LED, Signify listing | E26; the cited listing does not state dimensions | 120 V; 8.8 W; 650 lumens; 5000 K; nominal 110-degree beam; nominal life 15,000 hours; dimmable only with specific dimmers. Source |
| LEDVANCE/Sylvania BR30 incandescent | E26; 3.75-inch diameter; 5.38-inch length | 120 V; 45 W; 350 lumens; 2850 K. Source |
Which label should you use to choose a replacement?
Use E26 to identify the required socket connection, and BR30 to identify a reflector bulb’s shape and nominal size. Then verify the specific bulb’s dimensions and fixture compatibility. If you are comparing replacement bulbs, compare base, diameter and length, voltage and fixture rating, lumens, color temperature, beam pattern and dimmer support—not BR30 against E26 as if they were alternatives.
