A Hydrofloor is a mechanically movable pool floor: lower it to reveal the pool, or raise it to cover the water with a deck-like surface. The water stays in the pool; the floor changes how the space is used. For a construction project, the central questions are whether the pool can accommodate the mechanism, how it will be controlled safely, and whether the custom cost is justified by the extra usable space.
How a Hydrofloor changes the space
The floor moves vertically inside the pool. In its raised position, it covers the water and provides a surface that can be used as deck space; lowered, it reveals the pool for swimming. It can also stop at selected heights to vary the water depth. New Atlas described the system in 2010; Aqua Platinum’s October 2024 FAQ describes Twinscape floors that can be programmed or manually stopped at chosen depths.
This is not a conventional pool cover and does not turn the pool into a drained, solid floor. It is a moving structural element integrated into the pool design, so the pool shell, floor mechanism, controls and surrounding construction all need to be considered together.
What the pool design needs to accommodate
Depth and wall geometry
For the Twinscape system described in its FAQ, the pool needs approximately 700 mm (28 in) of depth below the intended swimming depth, or approximately 900 mm (36 in) when integrated steps are included. The FAQ also specifies vertical pool walls. These are supplier specifications for that system, not general rules for every movable-floor design; confirm the dimensions and structural requirements with the supplier and project engineer.

Those additional dimensions matter because the floor has to move within the pool while the pool remains usable at the chosen positions. A design that looks feasible based only on the desired water depth may not leave the space needed for the mechanism.
New construction or an existing pool
New construction allows the pool and floor mechanism to be designed together. Retrofitting an existing pool may be possible, but the FAQ warns it can involve substantial demolition and reconstruction, including providing additional depth and, for some designs, a pit. Depending on the work required, constructing a new pool may be more cost-effective than adapting the old one.

Before choosing a retrofit, have the pool geometry and surrounding structure assessed, then request a project-specific proposal that identifies the required alterations. The available information does not establish that every existing pool can be converted.
Operation, loads and safety planning
The supplier’s FAQ describes a hydraulic system and a standard raised-floor load capacity of 250 kg/m². Treat this as a vendor specification, not independently verified performance data or a substitute for the engineered load design for a particular installation. Confirm what the specified capacity covers, how the surface is finished, and whether the intended uses and loads are permitted.

The FAQ advises clearing both the floor and the pool while the floor is moving. It also recommends placing controls in direct view of the pool and protecting them with a key or passcode. These are supplier recommendations; the project’s controls, guarding and operating procedures must also satisfy applicable local rules and the engineered design.
Because the floor moves, its operation should be considered part of the pool’s safety plan, not just a convenience feature. Agree who may operate it, how the area will be checked before movement, and what instructions occupants will receive.

Installation, movement time and maintenance
Aqua Platinum’s October 2024 FAQ estimates installation at about a week, depending on size and complexity. It estimates approximately eight minutes for a floor to move in a 1.5 m (5 ft) deep pool. Both are supplier estimates, not guaranteed project durations or universal operating times; confirm the current estimate for the selected design and site conditions.
The FAQ recommends yearly servicing. Ask the installer what routine service includes, how faults are diagnosed, and what access is needed to maintain the mechanism after construction is complete.

What a Hydrofloor costs—and what to compare
No standard price or reliable price range is stated in the cited sources. The system is described as a custom design, manufacturing and installation project, with cost depending on factors such as pool size, options, shape and location. An existing-pool project may also require significant demolition and reconstruction.
To compare proposals, request a scope that separates the floor system from pool-shell work, site modifications, controls, finishes and ongoing service. Compare the resulting usable deck area, depth options, construction constraints and operating arrangements alongside the total project cost. The sources provide no independent comparative testing against other pool arrangements.
Energy and insulation claims
The 2010 New Atlas article and the Twinscape FAQ describe insulation or reduced evaporation as potential benefits.
