Dometic’s Recon Hardside coolers come in 16L, 41L, and 69L sizes, built around a stackable shape intended for vehicle storage. The family also includes 12L, 17L, and 21L Recon Softside ZL models. Dometic claims the Hardside can keep contents cold for up to eight days and be up to 30% lighter than rotomolded coolers; the official materials reviewed do not give test conditions for either claim.
Which Recon Hardside size fits your trip?
Dometic’s June 2025 launch announcement gives these capacities and can counts. The can figures are manufacturer claims, not a measure of usable space once ice, food packaging, or a divider is added.

| Hardside size | Stated capacity | Stated can count | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 16L | 18 cans | Compact loads or a smaller vehicle setup |
| Medium | 41L | 67 cans | Family day trips and weekend outings |
| Large | 69L | 100 cans | Longer trips or larger loads |
For a vehicle, compare the cooler’s outside dimensions with the cargo opening and the space available after other gear is packed. Dometic lists the 41L at 16.54 × 17.95 × 22.05 inches and 25.08 lb; the 69L at 16.54 × 17.95 × 33.07 inches and 33 lb. These are manufacturer specifications. The reviewed official materials do not establish the 16L model’s exterior dimensions, so check its current product listing before planning a tight fit. What makes Recon a modular, stackable system?
Dometic describes the Hardside as having an injection-molded shell, welded seams, up to two inches of insulation, and a removable lid that opens from either side. Its stackable profile and non-skid features are intended to make loading and securing coolers in a vehicle easier. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independently verified performance findings.

- Includes divider and drop in basket
- Injection-molded construction with two inches of performance insulation
- Removable non-skid lid opens from either side for easy access
- Durable die-cast metal latch catchers double as a bottle opener
- Integrates with Recon accessories (not included)
The system also has accessories. Dometic names ice blocks and a faucet or spigot, while its 69L product page says that model includes a drop-in basket and divider. Check compatibility for the exact cooler model before choosing add-ons; the reviewed materials do not establish a complete compatibility list for every size.
How should you interpret Dometic’s cooling and weight claims?
Dometic says Recon can keep contents cold for up to eight days and can be up to 30% lighter than rotomolded coolers. The June 3, 2025 announcement does not state a controlled test method, ambient temperature, ice load, opening frequency, or comparison model for those claims. No independent cooling or durability test result is established by the official sources cited here, so treat the figures as Dometic’s claims rather than a guaranteed result for a particular trip.

How does Recon compare with the Softside ZL range?
Dometic’s US family page lists three Softside ZL capacities alongside the Hardside sizes. The launch announcement also gives manufacturer-stated can counts for the ZL models.
| Recon Softside ZL size | Stated capacity | Stated can count |
|---|---|---|
| 12L | 12L | 19 cans |
| 17L | 17L | 28 cans |
| 21L | 21L | 35 cans |
These can counts are not directly comparable with usable volume: how much food and ice fit depends on packing and packaging. Choose between the Hardside and Softside ZL based on the form factor and features you need, and verify current model details on Dometic’s US Recon family page.

Price and availability: what is established?
Dometic’s June 3, 2025 launch announcement gave US launch MSRPs of $225 for the 16L, $325 for the 41L, and $425 for the 69L. Those are launch prices, not enduring quotes. The US 69L product page displayed $424.99 and a three-year warranty when retrieved on October 8, 2026; both the displayed offer and warranty presentation may change, so confirm the current listing and region before buying. Dometic’s announcement named Dometic.com, Amazon, and REI as North American launch sales channels, which does not establish current stock or listing availability.

- Measure the cargo opening and available vehicle space, then compare them with the model’s published outside dimensions.
- Choose capacity based on the load you expect to carry, allowing space for ice and packaging rather than relying on can count alone.
- Decide whether the stackable Hardside shape, two-sided lid access, or named accessories solve a real packing or access need.
- Confirm the exact model’s current specifications, included items, accessory compatibility, price, and warranty on its product page.
