Trees may need water in winter when root-zone soil is dry and thawed. Learn how to check soil, prioritize new trees and evergreens, and water safely.

Often, yes—but only if the soil around the roots is dry and thawed enough to absorb water. Check soil before watering, give extra attention to recently planted trees and evergreens during dry spells, and stop when the ground is frozen. Rain, snow, and local conditions can make a fixed winter schedule unnecessary.

How to decide whether a tree needs winter water

  1. Check the soil near the roots. Feel the soil below the surface near the drip line. The University of Maryland Extension recommends checking around six inches deep; Illinois Extension suggests digging a small hole four to six inches deep. If the soil is moist, skip watering rather than following a calendar.
  2. Check whether the ground can absorb water. Do not water frozen soil. Colorado State University Extension and Illinois Extension advise watering only when air temperatures are above 40°F; Colorado State also recommends watering around midday so water has time to soak in before a possible overnight freeze.
  3. Account for recent precipitation. Rain or snowmelt may already have replenished the root zone. Wind, sun exposure, dry air, soil type, and tree species also affect how quickly soil dries.

Which trees need closer attention?

Recently planted trees

New trees are a priority during prolonged dry weather because their roots have not yet spread far into surrounding soil. Colorado State University Extension says a tree generally takes about one year per inch of trunk diameter to establish under normal conditions; its example guidance means a two-inch-caliper tree may need at least two years to establish. Late-season plantings may be especially vulnerable because they have had less time to develop roots.

Evergreens

Evergreens retain foliage and can continue losing moisture in sunny or windy winter conditions. Utah State University Extension describes winter desiccation as a mismatch between water lost from foliage and water available to roots. Exposure on south- or southwest-facing sides and underdeveloped roots can increase risk.

Shallow-rooted trees

Birches, maples, lindens, alders, dogwoods, willows, and mountain ashes are among the shallow-rooted woody plants Colorado State University Extension identifies as more sensitive to drought injury. A mature deciduous tree is often a lower priority than a new planting or an evergreen, but its soil still matters: check moisture rather than assuming dormancy means no water is needed.

How often and how much to water

There is no single winter interval or volume that suits every tree and climate. Extension recommendations are regional guidance, not a universal prescription.

Guidance What it recommends Important qualification
University of Nevada, Reno Extension (2026) As a northern Nevada rule of thumb, water once every 3–4 weeks when temperatures are above freezing and soil can absorb water. For newly planted evergreens in their first 2–3 years, it suggests every 2–3 weeks. Its detailed conditions include daytime temperatures above 40°F, no snow or ice over the soil, and ground soft enough for water to penetrate.
Colorado State University Extension (2004; reviewed August 2025) About once or twice each month during extended dry periods without snow cover, and only when air and soil temperatures are above 40°F. This is Colorado guidance; check soil moisture and local conditions before watering.
Colorado State University Extension (2004; reviewed August 2025) Its general survival rule is 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter per watering; its example is 20 gallons for a two-inch-diameter tree. This is a general rule, not an exact dose for every tree, soil, or site.

Use these figures as context, not a schedule to follow regardless of weather. If soil remains moist, or recent rain or snowmelt has supplied water, do not add more just to meet an interval.

How to water safely in winter

  1. Choose a mild, suitable period. Wait until the soil is thawed and local temperature guidance allows watering. Avoid applying water when it will run off frozen ground or leave standing water that may freeze.
  2. Apply water slowly over the root zone. Water around the drip line and feeder-root area, not directly against the trunk. A slow trickle, soaker hose, or drip irrigation lets moisture soak in gradually. Colorado State University Extension recommends reaching about 12 inches deep and watering at multiple spots under the drip line and beyond when possible; the University of Maryland Extension advises deep, infrequent watering over the root area.
  3. Check the result. The soil should be moist, not waterlogged. If water pools or runs off, slow the application or stop.

A soaker hose, slow-trickle hose, or drip system can deliver water gradually. A watering bag may be useful for a newly planted tree; Illinois Extension also describes a five-gallon bucket with a small hole in the bottom as a simple slow-release option. These tools are optional.

How mulch can help

Mulch helps conserve soil moisture and moderate temperature swings. Keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Recommended depths vary by source and context: the University of Maryland Extension suggests two to three inches, while University of Nevada, Reno Extension describes two to four inches.

When should you stop watering before the ground freezes?

There is no universal calendar date. Stop supplemental watering once the ground is frozen; before then, water only when the root-zone soil is dry and conditions allow it to soak in. Colorado State University Extension recommends waiting for air and soil temperatures above 40°F, while Colorado guidance also favors midday watering to allow absorption before an overnight freeze. Follow local extension guidance for your area.
