No published evidence supports using coffee grounds to repel or kill moles. Washington State University Extension says there is no published evidence that coffee grounds repel or kill garden pests, but its guidance does not report a controlled trial specifically testing grounds against moles. Treat the claim as unsupported, not as experimentally disproved.
Why coffee grounds are not a dependable mole repellent
Washington State University Extension’s guidance on coffee grounds says there is no published evidence that they repel or kill garden pests. A University of Maryland Extension response also says coffee grounds do not act as pest control. Neither source establishes a mole-specific success rate or controlled comparison.
Fresh grounds also have gardening cautions unrelated to moles: WSU Extension warns they can harm plants and reduce seed germination or growth. Composting is a more appropriate way to reuse them in the garden. WSU Extension: Using Coffee Grounds in Gardens and Landscapes
First decide whether the mole activity needs control
Moles feed on earthworms and soil insects. Their raised surface tunnels are often mistaken for plant damage caused by other animals, and activity can be seasonal and stop on its own. If the tunnels are not causing a problem that warrants intervention, monitoring may be preferable to trying an unproven remedy. University of Maryland Extension: Moles

Options if you need to manage active tunnels
| Option | What the extension guidance says | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Trapping | Maryland Extension recommends placing several mole traps in recently constructed tunnels when control is needed. | Identify an active tunnel first; follow local guidance and the trap’s instructions. The source does not endorse a brand. |
| Castor-oil repellents | UC IPM reports some evidence of efficacy against eastern moles. | Effectiveness against western U.S. mole species is unknown. Repellents may shift damage to nearby lawns rather than solve a broader neighborhood problem. |
| Rigid physical barriers | Florida IFAS describes barriers as an option for protecting a limited area. | Installing them across an entire landscape is impractical. |
| Grub control | Not a dependable mole-control method. | Moles also eat earthworms and other soil invertebrates, so reducing grubs alone will not eliminate activity. |
| Coffee grounds, vibration devices, and home remedies | The reviewed sources provide no basis for recommending grounds; UC IPM says several commonly promoted remedies and frightening devices have not proved successful. | Do not assume an advertised or traditional remedy will repel moles. |

How to check for an active tunnel before trapping
- Press down a section of a recently built tunnel.
- Check it for fresh activity. A tunnel that is repaired or raised again is more useful to target than an old, inactive run.
- If you choose to trap, use several traps in active, recently constructed tunnels as Maryland Extension advises, and follow the trap instructions and local guidance.
Why removing grubs may not stop mole activity
Grub treatments target only one part of a mole’s food supply. Because moles also eat earthworms and other soil insects, grub control alone will not reliably solve a mole problem.

Local conditions matter
Mole species, regulations, product labels, and available control options vary by location. The evidence for castor-oil repellents is especially regional: UC IPM reports some efficacy for eastern moles but says effectiveness against western species is unknown. Extension recommendations are general guidance, not a guarantee for every garden.
