Choose a locksmith by checking the business and technician, confirming the job scope and price before work begins, and verifying any credentials required where you live. The safest time to find a local provider is before you are locked out; if you need help now, use the same checks as far as the situation allows.
Find and compare a locksmith before an emergency
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to research a local locksmith ahead of time and save the number. Its advice dates to 2008, but the core precaution remains useful: an advertisement that appears local may connect to an operation elsewhere, and a business may not have the professional training you expect. See the FTC’s locksmith guidance.
- Ask friends or family for a recommendation, then check the business name, local phone number, and stated address or service area.
- Look beyond the first paid search result. The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) warns that some operators invest heavily in search ads and route calls to out-of-state operations that claim to be local.
- Consider ALOA’s FindALocksmith directory as one way to locate a provider. ALOA says its members are peer-vetted and background-checked; membership is voluntary, so it does not replace checking local legal requirements, confirming the business, or reviewing the estimate.
ALOA notes that a mobile-only locksmith can still have local contact details. A street-facing storefront is not the only sign of a legitimate local service.
What to ask when you call
Give the provider enough detail to estimate the actual job, then ask what the estimate covers and what could change it. Where time allows, compare more than one provider using the same description of the work.

- What is the business name, and what area does it serve?
- What is the estimated total for the job described? Does it include the service call, labor, mileage, parts, and any after-hours charges?
- What circumstances could change the estimate, and will the technician explain any change and get your approval before proceeding?
- For a vehicle, provide the year, make, and model. Minnesota’s Attorney General says estimates should account for these details and include additional fees and replacement parts. For a home, describe the lock and any relevant security features.
- Can the provider supply an itemized receipt showing the service call, labor, and mileage?
Minnesota’s locksmith consumer guidance recommends getting an estimate and itemized receipt. There is no universal price range established by the sources cited here. A low quote alone does not prove wrongdoing, but a large unexplained difference between providers is a reason to ask more questions.
Checks to make when the technician arrives
Before authorizing the work, confirm that the person at your door is connected to the business you called and that the proposed work matches the estimate.

- Durable airbag: easy to lift tire, high hardness, good support
- Pull rod: Easily repair dents in cars
- Screwdriver: Easily remove engine screws
- Ask the technician for identification and compare the company name you called with the name on the vehicle, identification, and paperwork.
- If your state or locality requires locksmith credentials, ask to see the required credential and check it with the relevant local authority if needed.
- Ask what method the technician plans to use, why it is appropriate, and whether it could damage the lock or door. A claim that drilling is the only option immediately upon arrival is a warning sign worth questioning; no method can be guaranteed to work without damage in every situation.
- Review the work order and price before signing. Never sign a blank work order. If the scope or price changes, get the explanation and approve the change before work continues.
- Request an itemized receipt when the work is complete.
Warning signs that deserve a pause
ALOA identifies several behaviors that can indicate a bait-and-switch or other problem. None proves by itself that a provider is acting improperly, but each merits a pause and a clear explanation.
- A very low initial quote followed by a sharp increase after the technician arrives or work begins.
- A mismatch between the business you contacted and the company or name presented by the arriving technician.
- An immediate insistence that drilling is the only option, without a clear explanation of the proposed method.
- A cash-only demand or pressure to authorize work before you have a written estimate or understand the scope.
Ask for an itemized explanation, decline work you have not authorized, and contact a local consumer-protection office if you cannot resolve the concern. ALOA’s consumer guidance on avoiding locksmith scams describes these warning signs and suggests documenting a complaint.

Licensing depends on where you live
There is no basis for assuming that every U.S. locksmith needs a state license. Requirements vary by state and may also vary by municipality. Minnesota, for example, does not require statewide locksmith licensing or bonding, although some municipalities may require certification, according to the state Attorney General. ALOA recommends asking for state-issued identification in states with professional licensing requirements.
Check with the state or local authority responsible for occupational licensing where the service will take place. Do not rely on a provider’s unsupported claim of being “licensed nationwide.” California residents can consult the state Department of Consumer Affairs’ locksmith guide and current agency information for state-specific requirements.

Keep the paperwork and details needed to explain what happened. ALOA recommends contacting the consumer-protection department or attorney general in the state where the service occurred. USAGov maintains a directory of state consumer-protection offices.
Quick Recap
- Save the estimate, work order, invoice, messages, and payment records.
- Write down the business and technician names, date and time, service location, and business contact details.
- Record a license number if one applies, and take photos of the paperwork or service vehicle when appropriate.
- For suspected criminal damage or financial fraud in Minnesota, the state Attorney General advises reporting it to local police or the county sheriff.
