Thornless roses offer the flowers and fragrance of roses with easier handling, but “thornless” does not always mean perfectly smooth: some cultivars may still have occasional small thorns. A well-documented choice is Rosa ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’, a vigorous, fragrant climbing Bourbon rose with thornless stems, cerise-pink flowers and a long summer-to-autumn flowering period.
What “thornless rose” means
Thornlessness is a cultivar trait, not a guarantee that every plant marketed with that label will be entirely free of prickles. Heirloom Roses distinguishes thornless varieties from nearly thornless ones and notes that a plant may have a rare or small thorn (Heirloom Roses’ thornless rose guide). The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), by contrast, describes the stems of ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’ as thornless (RHS cultivar profile).
When choosing a rose, check the named cultivar and whether the listing says thornless or nearly thornless. Also match its mature size, flowering pattern, fragrance and site requirements to the space available.

Other names to investigate
Heirloom Roses lists Ballerina, Lady Banks rose, Mme Plantier, Tausendschön, Veilchenblau, Aimée Vibert and Belinda’s Blush among candidates associated with thornless or nearly thornless roses. Treat these as starting points, not confirmed recommendations: the retailer separates thornless from near-thornless listings, so verify the exact cultivar and its description before buying.
How to choose the right rose
- Thornlessness: Look for a cultivar described as thornless, and check whether the seller qualifies that as “nearly” thornless or warns of occasional small thorns.
- Growth habit and space: Distinguish climbers, ramblers, shrubs and compact plants. Compare mature height and spread with the support and room available; ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’ is a substantial climber.
- Flower and fragrance: Consider color, flower form, flower size and scent.
- Flowering pattern: Check whether the rose has one main flush or flowers repeatedly over a longer season. Many climbing roses repeat from early summer into autumn, though timing varies by cultivar and conditions (RHS guide to climbing roses).
- Site conditions: Check sun exposure, soil drainage and moisture, and whether a wall or structure will shelter the roots from rainfall.
The American Rose Society also describes thornless Boursault ramblers in its rose classification information (American Rose Society: classifying roses). This is class-level background rather than a cultivar-by-cultivar buying list.

Growing ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’
Site and soil
The RHS recommends full sun and moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. The cultivar tolerates shade and a north-facing aspect, but tolerance does not remove the need to monitor moisture. A wall can create a rain shadow: soil close to it may dry out, which can reduce later flowering and encourage fungal disease. Check the soil near the roots rather than assuming rainfall reaches it (RHS guide to climbing roses).
Feeding and mulch
The RHS advises applying balanced fertiliser and mulch in late winter or early spring, then balanced fertiliser again in early summer. Follow product directions for the fertiliser you use.

Pruning and possible problems
The RHS assigns ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’ to pruning group 17; use that cultivar-specific classification as the starting point for pruning guidance. The RHS also lists possible susceptibility to black spot, rust, powdery mildews and other rose problems. These are risks to watch for, not a prediction that every plant will develop them.
