They are not a single, canonical traditional list. Rather, the first three form the Three Friends of Winter, plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum make up the Four Gentlemen, and lotus and peony add other well-documented garden associations. Choose plants for their meaning and for the conditions your garden can actually provide.
Start with the symbolism, not a fixed planting recipe
Chinese garden traditions use plants to express character and mark seasonal change. Their meanings can depend on historical setting, literary reference, and which plants appear together, so treat them as design associations rather than universal definitions. A useful foundation is the overlap between two familiar groupings: pine, plum, and bamboo are the Three Friends of Winter, while plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are the Four Gentlemen. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the Three Friends and the role of plants as seasonal markers in its Chinese Gardens overview; the Huntington also discusses the seasonal grouping and plant symbolism in its Chinese Garden.
The Shanghai Municipal Administration of Greening and City Appearance describes the Four Gentlemen as symbols of high-mindedness, uprightness, refinement, and integrity, and discusses pine’s association with longevity in its account of classical plant combinations. Plum and bamboo therefore belong to both groupings; that overlap is part of the tradition, not a contradiction. The seven-plant selection below combines these established groupings with lotus and peony, not a historical seven-plant canon.
Choose plants for the roles they play
| Plant | Symbolic or design role | How to use the association |
|---|---|---|
| Pine | One of the Three Friends of Winter; associated with persistence and, in Shanghai’s account, longevity. | Use it to suggest endurance and provide evergreen structure where the local site and climate suit the chosen plant. |
| Plum | One of the Three Friends of Winter and one of the Four Gentlemen. | Its presence connects the two groupings; consider it as part of a seasonal story rather than a stand-alone emblem. |
| Bamboo | One of the Three Friends of Winter and one of the Four Gentlemen. | Its symbolic role is well established, but choose a suitable species and planting approach for your site rather than assuming one type fits every garden. |
| Orchid | One of the Four Gentlemen; the Huntington also associates it with humility. | Use the association to add a quieter note of cultivated character; confirm the needs of the particular orchid before planting. |
| Chrysanthemum | One of the Four Gentlemen and associated with autumnal interest. | It can bring the garden’s seasonal story into focus in autumn, subject to local growing conditions. |
| Lotus | A beloved garden plant associated with purity. | Consider it for a pond or suitable water garden, after checking that the site can support it. |
| Peony | Associated with wealth, prosperity, and honor in the cited Chinese garden material. | Use it as a focal planting if the location meets the needs of the plant you select. |
These meanings are documented in the Met’s Chinese Gardens overview, the Huntington’s Chinese Garden page, and Shanghai’s discussion of classical plant combinations. They describe cultural associations, not horticultural guarantees or fixed rules for every design.

Build a seasonal story across the garden
Rather than trying to display every symbolic plant equally, arrange them to give the garden a legible progression. One possible design approach is to establish an enduring framework with pine, plum, and bamboo; bring orchid and chrysanthemum into a more intimate or contemplative area; then use lotus by water and peony as a focal planting where conditions allow. This is a design suggestion, not a prescribed traditional layout.
Seasonality can help connect the garden to time as well as meaning. The Met notes that plants can serve as seasonal markers; the Huntington discusses peach blossom in spring and chrysanthemum in autumn. A garden can therefore balance lasting structure with plants whose interest changes through the year, without requiring every plant in the symbolic palette to thrive in every season or location.

- Fast Seed Germination: Garlic chives seeds for planting sprout in about 7-14 days with moisture and warmth; sow 1/4 inch deep after last frost in full sun to part shade in herb garden.
- Hardy Perennial Herbs : Garlic chive seeds grow in USDA zones 3-9, forming tidy clumps about 14 inches tall; ideal for a home garden border or kitchen herb patch with steady moisture.
- Bold Garlic Flavor: Garlic chives add sweet garlic bite to eggs, soups, and stir-fries; begin harvest of fresh herbs in year 2 when leaves reach 6 inches, cutting 1/2 inch above soil in any vegetable garden.
- Edible White Blooms: Chinese chives seeds produce fragrant late summer to early fall flowers that attract butterflies; buds and blooms garnish salads and noodles, and fit heirloom seeds collections.
- Easy Care & Containers: Allium tuberosum thrives in pots or beds; thin to 6-8 inches, rows 18 inches, then divide clumps as they spread; great with carrots and other garden seeds, non gmo seeds.
Match placement to the actual site
Before settling on positions, assess the garden’s terrain, orientation, sunlight, moisture, and the needs of each candidate plant. Shanghai’s guidance on courtyard planting specifically emphasizes adapting arrangements to terrain, orientation, and moisture. See the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Greening and City Appearance’s courtyard planting guidance.
- Check the light and moisture available in each part of the garden, not just the site as a whole.
- Consider terrain and orientation when deciding where a plant will fit visually and horticulturally.
- Verify the needs of the actual species or cultivar before committing to a location, especially for bamboo, orchids, lotus, and peony.
- Let site conditions determine which symbolic choices are practical. A small courtyard, a dry garden, or a climate unsuitable for a particular plant may call for a different selection.
The cited sources establish symbolic roles and broad placement principles, but they do not provide a region-by-region hardiness or maintenance guide for all seven plants. Use local horticultural guidance to confirm species, cultivar, and care requirements for your area.

Use symbolism as a design aid, not a checklist
A coherent Chinese-inspired planting does not need all seven plants. Start with the cultural ideas you want the garden to express, then select the plants that suit the site. A few well-placed plants with a clear seasonal and symbolic relationship will make a more considered design than forcing a complete list into unsuitable conditions. Keep meanings contextual, and let the garden’s terrain, orientation, and growing conditions shape the final arrangement.
