Sometimes—but not reliably enough to identify a wire. Red is a preferred color for a positive DC line conductor in the IEC 60445:2017 excerpt, and it is commonly used for DC positive in the University of Maryland Extension’s US-oriented solar wiring guidance. In AC wiring, red may identify a line or hot conductor; AC uses line and neutral, not fixed positive and negative poles. Color conventions depend on the circuit, jurisdiction, and installation.
What does red mean in a DC circuit?
In direct-current (DC) wiring, polarity matters: a circuit has positive and negative conductors. The IEC 60445:2017 excerpt reproduced by iTeh Standards Store identifies red as the preferred color for the positive DC line conductor and white as preferred for negative.
For the US-oriented solar wiring context addressed by the University of Maryland Extension, red is typically used for positive and black for ungrounded DC negative. That is a convention in the guidance’s context, not a guarantee about every installation. The applicable standard, local requirements, and equipment markings matter.
Why AC red wires are not “positive”
Alternating-current (AC) wiring is identified by conductor roles such as line (also called hot) and neutral. The voltage alternates, so the conductors are not fixed positive and negative poles in the DC sense. A red conductor in an AC system may be a line conductor.

For US panelboards, Schneider Electric’s FAQ says the National Electrical Code (NEC) does not specify one color arrangement for three-phase systems and describes common practices instead. The FAQ was last modified April 20, 2026. Common practice should not be mistaken for a universal code mandate or a guarantee about a particular installation.
The IEC 60445:2017 excerpt lists black, brown, and grey as preferred AC line-conductor colors. These preferences differ from the US practices described by Schneider Electric, which is why color conventions should not be transferred from one region or system to another.

How to interpret wire color safely
Color is one clue, not proof of a conductor’s function, polarity, or electrical state. Red can have different meanings in DC and AC wiring, and color alone cannot establish whether a wire is energized or safe to touch.
- Identify whether the circuit is AC or DC.
- Consider the jurisdiction and the wiring convention or code applicable to that installation.
- Check conductor role and any equipment or installation markings; do not assume red means positive.
- Do not connect, cut, or touch an unknown conductor based only on its color. Have a qualified electrician identify it.
OSHA’s construction wiring regulation, 29 CFR 1926.404, includes polarity-of-connections and grounding provisions for specified DC systems. It does not turn wire color into a safe identification method or provide a basis here for a DIY procedure to test unknown wiring.

Which convention applies to your installation?
Use the circuit type, conductor role, equipment labels, jurisdiction, and applicable local requirements together. A code excerpt or a description of common practice cannot establish the requirements for every location: the NEC text reproduced by StudyLib is a secondary reproduction of the 2017 edition, not confirmation of the code currently adopted in your area.
If you cannot establish what a red conductor does from reliable installation documentation and markings, stop and ask a qualified electrician rather than guessing from color.
