A lit key or lock generally means the door is locked, while a child-lock symbol means the controls are restricted. Because icons differ by model, use your washer’s manual to identify any symbol that is not covered here.
Washer icons, error codes and clothing-care symbols are different
Samsung distinguishes icons from codes: an icon tells you what the washer is doing or which feature is selected, while an error or check code points to a condition that may need troubleshooting. Some display characters are easy to misread: Samsung notes that 5 can look like S, and 3 can look like E. Check the display carefully before looking up a code. For code-specific help, see Samsung UK’s washing-machine code guide or the manual for your model.
The symbols printed on clothing-care labels are a separate system. A washtub gives washing instructions, including temperature; a triangle relates to bleaching; a square to drying; an iron to ironing; and a circle to professional cleaning. Do not interpret these garment marks as washer controls.
Common Samsung washer display symbols
The meanings below are examples from Samsung’s UK support guide, not a complete list for every washer. Samsung says, “Available icons and their appearance will vary between models.” Feature names and icon designs can also differ by market.

What to do when a symbol is unfamiliar
- Read the display exactly. Note the icon or characters, whether they are steady or blinking, and what the washer was doing. Check carefully for lookalike characters such as 5 and S.
- Check the model-specific manual. Search the manual for the displayed label or symbol. A general icon list cannot establish the meaning of every model’s indicator.
- Decide whether it is an icon or a code. A feature or operating-state icon may need no action; an error/check code belongs in the troubleshooting section of the manual or Samsung’s support guidance.
- Follow the model’s instructions before interrupting a cycle. Samsung India cautions users to pause before switching power off during a cycle. Use the controls and shutdown steps specified for your washer rather than cutting power as a first response.
- Contact Samsung support if the manual does not resolve it. This is the safer route for an unlisted code, an unclear indicator, or a symbol accompanied by unusual washer behavior.
Panel labels and detergent guidance
Some Samsung panels use controls such as a navigation dial, Start/Pause, display, OK, and separate temperature, rinse or spin selections. Their arrangement and operation are not universal; use the labels on your panel and the manual for your exact model. Samsung India’s panel icon guide describes controls for its market, but local model variants can differ.
If a detergent-related indicator or drawer question is what brought you here, Samsung US says its washing machines require HE (High Efficiency) detergent and advises using the least needed without exceeding the drawer’s MAX line. Its instructions for liquid, powder and pods depend on washer type and drawer arrangement; consult the Samsung US detergent guide and your model manual rather than assuming the same placement applies to every machine.
