How to Create a Four-Corner Grain Match on a Mitered Box

Resaw a single blank into a matched pair, use the resawn faces outside, and number each mating corner to carry the grain around a mitered box.

To make wood grain flow around all four corners of a mitered box, cut the box parts from two thinner boards resawn from the same blank. Use the newly exposed resawn faces on the outside, preserve the boards’ orientation, and match numbered corners during assembly. This technique is called four-corner grain matching or continuous grain matching.

Why resawing creates a continuous grain pattern

Resawing one thick blank into two thinner boards preserves the relationship between their grain figures. The exposed resawn faces show mirror-image patterns. When the box parts are laid out in sequence and the matching corners are joined, the figure appears to continue across the miters and around the box.

WOOD magazine’s instructions, attributed to Vince Ancona and updated July 28, 2022, describe this approach as producing a near-perfect match. The result depends on preserving the original orientation and keeping the corresponding cuts aligned; it is not a guarantee that every grain figure will make a visually seamless line.

Prepare the blank and establish its orientation

  1. Choose stock with enough thickness. Start with a blank at least 1/8 inch thicker than twice the finished wall thickness. This allowance provides material for resawing and planing the two halves to final thickness.
  2. Mark the blank before cutting. Add clear orientation marks across the blank so you can tell how the two halves relate after resawing. Keep the marks visible as you work.
  3. Joint and rip to width. Bring the blank to the finished width of the box walls.
  4. Trim it to length. Leave about 1/4 inch beyond the combined length of one side and one end.

These dimensions are practical instructions from the cited method, not universal tolerances. Plan for the actual box design and the material you will remove during milling.

JessEm 06300 Box Joint & Finger Joint Jig for Router Tables, 3 Key Sizes
  • FITS MOST ROUTER TABLES - Locks into a standard 3/4" miter slot. Just check that the distance from your miter track to the center of the router bit falls between 5-11/16" and 7-3/16". Also works on shaper tables with a standard track.
  • TIGHT, GAP-FREE FINGER JOINTS - Machined aluminum indexing keys set exact finger spacing, so drawers, boxes and cabinets slide together square and snug. No layout lines or math; one test cut dials in the fit, even for first-time box jointers.
  • 3 KEY SIZES, 3 SACRIFICIAL FENCES - Swap between 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" keys, each with its own Baltic birch fence that backs up the cut to reduce tearout and blowout in plywood, hardwood and end grain.
  • SMOOTH BEARING GLIDE, 4-1/4" TRAVEL - Four sealed R4 bearings carry the sled with almost no friction, so every pass lands in the same place. Great for batching drawer sides, gift boxes, keepsake boxes and jewelry boxes in one setup.
  • SAFER, ORGANIZED SHOP WORK - An adjustable bit guard shields your hands, a dovetail slot accepts Micro-Jig MatchFit clamps, and open router lift access lets you set bit height without removing the plate. Hangs on the wall for storage.

Resaw, plane, and lay out the parts

  1. Resaw the blank into two halves. Keep the orientation marks and treat the halves as a matched pair.
  2. Plane both halves to final thickness. Remove most of the material from the blank’s original outside faces. This preserves more of the matching figure on the newly exposed resawn faces, which will become the box’s outside faces.
  3. Lay out the box parts. Arrange the parts on the blanks in the intended sequence, with the resawn faces outward.
  4. Number the mating corners. Mark each pair of ends that will meet at a corner with the same number. Keep the labels with the parts through cutting and assembly.

Cut the miters and protect the match

Cut the parts to length at the miters, removing the same amount from corresponding ends of both blanks. Unequal trimming can shift the grain pattern relative to the joint, so keep the paired parts aligned as you make the end cuts. Remove as little material at the miters as practical while still making accurate, clean joints.

Dry-assemble before glue-up

  1. Arrange the parts into the box without glue.
  2. Match the numbered ends at each corner and check that the grain pattern flows as intended across all four miters.
  3. Correct any reversed or misplaced parts before applying glue.
  4. Once the alignment is right, glue up the box while keeping the parts in their verified positions.

A suitable resawing setup is necessary for the central operation, but the cited instructions do not specify a saw model, blade dimensions, setup, or tool-performance comparison. Choose equipment based on the stock and your shop’s capabilities rather than assuming one particular machine is required.

What to check if the grain does not line up

  • A corner looks reversed: Check the orientation marks and numbered ends; a part may have been turned around or placed in the wrong position.
  • The figure shifts across a miter: Confirm that corresponding ends were trimmed by the same amount and that the parts remained aligned during layout.
  • The match looks weaker after planing: The method’s planing tip is to remove most material from the original outside faces, preserving the figure on the resawn faces used outside.
  • The grain itself does not form a seamless line: The technique preserves and positions the matching figure, but the sources do not establish that every blank will yield a perfectly continuous-looking pattern.

A Wood Whisperer project listing dated January 9, 2023, also describes a keepsake box built around a four-corner grain match, corroborating the technique’s use in boxmaking: Wood Whisperer keepsake-box project.
