An old wagon can become a movable focal point and a small container garden, but it works best as a decorative planter—not as a substitute for a full garden bed. Check its condition and history, give excess water a way out, and choose plants for the wagon’s soil depth, sun exposure, and local climate.
Choose a wagon and a planting approach
Wagons and carts are recognized options for reused garden containers, according to University of Illinois Extension. Before planting, check that the wagon is stable and usable. Look for sharp edges, loose hardware, deep rust, or signs that it held a substance that could harm people or plants.
Decide whether you want to plant directly in the wagon or keep nursery pots inside it. The choice affects drainage, flexibility, and how much you alter the wagon.
| Approach | Best when | What to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Plant directly in the wagon | You want a single, integrated display and the wagon can be modified to drain. | Provide open drainage holes and monitor moisture in the limited soil volume. |
| Use the wagon as a holder for nursery pots | You want to avoid drilling or want to swap plants seasonally. | Use pots with drainage openings, keep those openings clear, and remove water that collects in the wagon. |
Virginia Tech’s container guidance describes using a draining inner pot inside a decorative outer container when the outer container cannot drain. It also advises against adding gravel or stones at the bottom as a drainage fix; use drainage holes or the inner-pot approach instead. See Virginia Tech’s container gardening guidance.

Prepare the wagon safely
- Inspect it. Confirm that it is stable and that handles, wheels, and other hardware are secure. Decide whether its condition and known history suit the plants you intend to grow.
- Clean it. Illinois Extension recommends washing reused containers with soapy water, then disinfecting them with a solution of one part chlorine bleach to nine parts water. Follow the bleach product label and local safety directions.
- Set up drainage. If planting directly, the wagon needs openings through which excess water can escape. If you cannot or do not want to drill it, use draining nursery pots and do not let water stand in the wagon.
- Protect yourself if drilling. Follow the tool maker’s safety instructions and protect your eyes and hands. The project guidance from This Old House lists safety goggles and gloves, but that is DIY advice, not a safety certification for any particular wagon.
Match soil and plants to the wagon
Use a potting mix intended for container growing rather than treating the wagon like an ordinary garden bed. Oklahoma State University Extension recommends bagged potting soil in its wagon planter discussion.
Measure the usable soil depth before choosing plants. Oklahoma State Extension’s general guidance is that most plants need at least 4 to 6 inches of soil; this is not a guarantee for every species. In hot conditions, a shallow wagon bed can dry quickly. The extension specifically suggests drought-tolerant sedums for shallow wagon planters in hot weather, while noting that wagon planters may be impractical in extreme summer heat without careful watering and plant selection.

For other plants, consider mature root and soil-depth needs, sun exposure, drought tolerance, and local climate. The wagon’s appearance alone is not enough to determine what will thrive. If you hope to grow edible crops, do not assume an unknown wagon is suitable: Virginia Tech advises that vegetable containers should never have held substances toxic to people or plants. See its guidance on vegetable containers.
Arrange the display and keep it watered
For a composed look, combine plant forms: use an upright plant for height, fuller growth through the center, and trailing plants near the edges. Treat this as a design option, not a required formula; the final selection still needs to suit the wagon’s depth and growing conditions.

A wagon’s small soil volume may dry faster than a ground-level garden. Check the mix’s moisture and water when needed rather than relying on a fixed schedule. Oklahoma State Extension’s guidance discusses this drying risk, and the University of Illinois Extension container guidance also emphasizes appropriate care for reused containers.

Place the planted wagon where its materials and condition suit the setting, and where you can reach it to check moisture or remove collected water. Its wheels and handle can contribute to a playful, mobile look, but do not assume they make it safe to move when loaded: no safe load limit is established for an individual wagon. Keep the planting modest enough for the wagon’s known condition, and treat the finished piece as a decorative container whose success depends on drainage, soil volume, and suitable plants.
