A clear jar or recycled bottle can become a useful garden rain gauge, provided you give it a readable scale and set it upright in an open spot. Choose a simple jar if you want to avoid cutting; use an inverted bottle top as a funnel if you want a recycled build. Either way, calibrate the markings instead of assuming that any line on the container represents a known amount of rainfall.
Choose a design that fits your garden

These are household and educational gauges, not verified instruments for official meteorological records. The cited guides do not provide controlled accuracy comparisons among the designs.
Build a bottle funnel gauge
- Choose the container. Use a clear bottle with sides as straight as possible where you plan to mark the scale.
- Cut off the narrowing top. Ask an adult to help: cutting a bottle can be tricky and leave sharp edges, as NC State Extension’s instructions caution.
- Make the funnel. Turn the cut-off top upside down and fit it into the lower part of the bottle. Secure it with tape, keeping the opening clear.
- Set a baseline and mark the scale. Choose one calibration approach. The Met Office bottle method describes making a flat base with jelly. Alternatively, the National Trust for Scotland guide adds a measured 100 ml of water, marks its level around the bottle, and uses that as a starting reference. These are alternative methods; do not combine them as though they were one required procedure. Add equal, clearly labeled increments with a ruler.
- Mount it securely. Keep the bottle vertical. Burying its lower portion or placing rocks around it can help stop it tipping; a holder is another option.
Make a no-cut jar gauge
- Set a clear, straight-sided jar on a level surface. A narrow container can make the water level easier to read.
- Add a measured amount of water, mark its level, and repeat with equal measured additions to create labeled increments. NOAA’s Build Your Own Weather Station guide demonstrates calibration by adding measured water quantities.
- When reading the water level, use the bottom of the meniscus—the curved surface of the water—as the reference point, as NOAA describes.
- Move the jar to a stable outdoor position and check that it remains upright.
A measured starting level is especially useful if the vessel’s bottom is not flat. Decide clearly where your scale’s zero point sits; uncalibrated marks on an arbitrary container do not automatically measure rainfall depth.
Place the gauge where it can catch rain
Set the opening in an unobstructed outdoor spot, away from trees, roofs, and other objects that could block or divert rain. Keep the gauge vertical and secure it against tipping. The Met Office suggests burying the bottle, while the National Trust for Scotland describes placing rocks around it; NOAA also shows a holder made from bent wire.

If you decorate the gauge, keep the markings visible and do not cover or narrow the opening. Decorating a separate holder is a straightforward way to add color without interfering with the collected water.
Read, record, and empty it consistently
- Check the gauge at a consistent time, ideally soon after rain so evaporation has less time to alter the reading.
- Read the level against the scale and record the amount in a notebook or weather journal.
- Empty the gauge after recording so the next reading starts from the same baseline.
The Met Office recommends checking the gauge every day at the same time, measuring the collected rain, and emptying the bottle. A daily routine and simple record make readings easier to compare over time.

Safety and measurement limits
- Get adult help when cutting a bottle; cut plastic can have sharp edges.
- Secure lightweight containers and avoid placing glass where it could be knocked over.
- Treat a homemade gauge as a practical way to observe rainfall in your garden. The available guidance does not establish formal meteorological accuracy or suitability for official records.
NASA’s Rain Gauge Design Challenge likewise frames gauge-making as a design activity in which calibration is central to measuring rainfall.
