For a tube-style RGB light with individual colors and animations, use an addressable LED strip inside a translucent tube or diffuser, controlled by a WLED-compatible microcontroller and powered by a supply sized for the strip. Choose the strip, enclosure, and power system as one design: voltage, LED count, tube dimensions, and wiring all affect what will work safely.
Choose the control type first
Addressable strips for pixel effects
Addressable strips let the controller set individual LEDs or pixels, making them the right choice for moving patterns and per-pixel effects. WLED distinguishes digital addressable strips, including WS2812B-compatible RGB and RGBW types, from analog strips. Check the exact strip’s voltage and data compatibility before purchasing or wiring it. WLED’s compatible LED strip documentation explains supported strip types.
Analog strips for simpler color control
Analog RGB strips do not provide individual-pixel control. They use separate control channels for colors rather than a data signal for each pixel, so choose one only if whole-strip color changes meet the goal. Do not treat an analog strip as interchangeable with an addressable strip: the controller and wiring approach differ.
Plan the enclosure and light output
Round tube
A translucent opal acrylic tube can both enclose the strip and soften its appearance. A WLED community maker, Twanne, reported a roughly 1.5 m build using a 30 mm outer-diameter tube and an 80-LED WS2812B strip. Those dimensions describe that individual project, not a standard tube size or a guaranteed fit. Confirm the tube’s internal clearance, strip width, mounting method, and access for wiring before buying.

Profile with diffuser
A cut-to-size aluminum profile with an opal diffuser is another linear-light format. It is not a round tube, but it can suit installations where a straight mounted channel is more practical. One manufacturer documents profiles, diffusers, end caps, and mounting accessories; check the selected profile’s dimensions against the strip and installation space. Klus Design’s profile system is an example of this category.
Select compatible control and power hardware
Controller
For new WLED projects, its getting-started guide says, “For a new project, an ESP32 is the better pick.” This is WLED’s project guidance, not a claim that every existing controller is unsuitable. Select a board supported by the WLED setup you intend to use, then follow the board’s pin guidance for the data connection. WLED’s getting-started guide covers the initial setup.

Power supply and strip sizing
Choose the supply only after you know the strip voltage, LED count, density, and intended brightness. Twanne’s project used a 5 V, 4 A supply and estimated it would support about 90 LEDs in that build. These are one maker’s reported parts and estimate, not a general sizing rule. Calculate for the specific strip and installation, and use a supply with the same voltage required by that strip.
Parts checklist
- LED strip: addressable RGB or RGBW if individual effects are required; verify protocol and voltage.
- Enclosure: opal acrylic tube or a suitably sized profile and diffuser.
- Controller: a WLED-compatible board, with ESP32 recommended by WLED for new projects.
- Power supply: matched to the strip voltage and calculated load.
- Wiring and protection: conductors rated for the actual current and appropriate circuit fusing.
- Mounting and connection materials: selected to suit the enclosure, installation location, and strip connection requirements.
Wire and protect the installation
A digital strip’s basic connections are power, data, and ground. Use the pin guidance for the selected controller and verify the strip’s connection requirements rather than relying on wire colors alone. WLED warns that low-voltage systems can still carry enough current to create fire hazards. Its wiring guidance recommends sizing the supply and wiring appropriately and protecting circuits with suitable fusing.

- Confirm the strip specifications. Record its voltage, length, LED count, and manufacturer’s current information for the planned operating conditions.
- Determine the supply and wiring for the actual load. Do not copy the 5 V, 4 A rating from the community example without checking whether it matches your build.
- Plan power distribution. Longer or higher-load installations may need power injection at more than one point. Dim or discolored LEDs toward the far end can indicate voltage drop.
- Install suitable circuit protection. Use wiring rated for the current and appropriate fusing; keep connections secure and follow the power supply and controller instructions.
- Test before closing the enclosure. Check that the controller operates the chosen strip and inspect the full lit length for uneven output before sealing or mounting the assembly.
Build around the actual dimensions
Make the final selection from the fit and electrical requirements together. A denser strip can change both the visual resolution of effects and the power demand; a different tube or profile changes the available space and mounting options. The available examples establish useful construction approaches, but not a universal best strip, tube size, or supply rating.
