You can add moving water outdoors with a fountain in a pot, a buried disappearing fountain, a rock bubbler, a bamboo spout, or a planted pond-in-a-pot. A container fountain is usually the most straightforward starting point; the right choice depends on your space, power access, materials, and how much of the reservoir you want visible.
Choose a fountain that fits your space and setup
Before choosing materials, decide where the feature will sit, whether a suitable power source is available, and whether you want an open container or a hidden reservoir. A pot fountain makes the water level easy to check and suits a patio or small garden. A disappearing fountain can blend into a planting bed, but takes more excavation and careful support for its cover. Place the feature where you can see, fill, and clean it.
| Idea | Water and reservoir | Space and build considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Fountain-in-a-pot | Visible water in a watertight container | Compact, with fewer structural parts; convenient for checking water level |
| Cobblestone disappearing fountain | Water returns through stone, mesh, and a grid to a buried reservoir | Blends into a bed, but requires excavation and a supported cover |
| Rock bubbler | Water bubbles through a drilled rock and drains into a reservoir | Requires a large, heavy rock, support, and aligned tubing |
| Bamboo-spout fountain | A bamboo spout directs water into a shallow bowl over a hidden reservoir | Compact focal point; tubing must run through the spout |
| Pond-in-a-pot | A large watertight pot holds aquatic plants; a pump is optional | Container-garden approach; circulation and sound require a pump |

Five DIY water fountain ideas
1. Fountain-in-a-pot
A watertight outdoor pot, a submersible pump, and compatible tubing make a simple recirculating feature. Set the pump on a stable brick or other support so debris is less likely to block its intake. Attach tubing that fits the pump outlet, fill the pot, and adjust the flow according to the pump and fountain instructions. Washed decorative river rock can cover the pump and tubing while leaving water able to circulate.

- Adjustable Flow Rate: Water flow can be adjusted via the control knob and change different nozzles to meet the water pressure you want; As the lift height increases, the flow rate decreases
- Detachable & Cleanable: This powerful yet small-sized water pump is easy to hide and disguise; No tools are necessary for disassembly and it’s very easy to clean
- Many Possible Placement Positions: Place the pump flat on its base, stick it on an angled or vertical surface, and manually rotate it into any position you need
- Wide Range of Applications: This is a high-performance, energy-efficient pump and is well-designed for use in fish tanks, fountains, hydroponic systems, irrigation systems, etc
If your pot has drainage holes, seal them as part of the build. Lowe’s also describes concealing the pump and cord within the arrangement and finishing with rinsed river rock in its DIY garden fountain instructions.
2. Cobblestone disappearing fountain
In this design, water falls onto cobblestone and drains through mesh and a grid into a reservoir hidden below. The visible surface is stone rather than an open bowl, which can make the feature feel integrated with a garden bed. The cover must be adequately supported, and the stones must allow water to return rather than sealing off the reservoir.

- WATER FLOW CONTROL -- The GROWNEER water pump features a control knob to adjust the flow of water, allowing you to achieve the desired water pressure. The maximum flow rate is 550 GPH (2000 L/H). Note: It's recommended to use a residual current protection socket or circuit breaker when using outdoors
- STRONG POWER & HIGH LIFT -- Maximum Lift Height: 7.2 ft. The water submersible pump model number is SML-630. 30W high-efficiency motor, energy-saving. Lift height refers to the maximum height that water rises after the water pipe is connected to the nozzle. (Make sure the joint is tightly sealed)
- 3 NOZZLES WATER PUMP -- Each submersible water pump has 3 nozzles to choose from: 0.51"/0.62"/0.75". Provides different water flows according to your needs. Threaded fittings make it more stable. Detachable and cleanable
- SUCTION CUP & 5.9FT POWER CORD -- The aquarium pump has a long enough cord for easy installation. 4 independent powerful suction cups help keep it in place so you can stick it vertically or horizontally to the right side of your aquarium
- WIDE APPLICATION -- The water fountain pump circulates and aerates the water, making it more attractive to your fish or turtles. This submersible pump is ideal for aquariums, fountains, spouts hydroponic systems, etc
Plan access to the hidden basin for filling and maintenance. Kansas State’s guide to disappearing fountains covers reservoir construction, finishing, upkeep, and safety.
3. Rock bubbler
A drilled rock sits over a reservoir, with tubing aligned through its center so water bubbles from the top and runs back down through surrounding stone. Compared with a pot fountain, the rock’s weight and the need for a stable support make this a more involved material-handling project. Choose a layout that leaves a route for water to drain and keeps the pump accessible.

A solar-powered version is possible. UF/IFAS documents a design using a lined reservoir, drilled granite, flexible tubing, a 12-volt DC pump, and solar panels. The documented pump operated during daylight; that example does not establish continuous operation or guarantee that any panel and pump will work together. See UF/IFAS Extension’s solar water-feature instructions.
4. Bamboo-spout fountain
Run flexible tubing through a bamboo spout and direct the flow or drip into a shallow stone bowl. The bowl sits above a hidden reservoir, so water can return to the pump without an exposed large basin. This can make a compact focal point, but the tubing and spout need to be arranged so the outlet lands in the bowl and the water returns to the reservoir.

5. Pond-in-a-pot
Use a large, watertight pot as a small container water garden with submerged or floating aquatic plants. A pump is optional: the planted pot can function without one, while a pump adds circulation and water sound. Choose plants suited to the container and avoid assuming that a small pot is appropriate for fish.

For a basic pot fountain, the sourced instructions call for a watertight container, submersible pump, tubing compatible with its outlet, stable pump support, and optional washed decorative stone. A buried or rock fountain also needs a reservoir or liner, mesh or a grate to support the finish, and stone arranged to hide the mechanism without blocking water’s return.

There is no single gallons-per-hour rating that fits every fountain. Pump choice depends on the desired flow, the height water must rise (head or lift), and the feature’s geometry. Follow the pump manufacturer’s instructions and check that the tubing and fittings match the outlet and lift required by your design. K-State’s Simple and Low Cost Water Features explains flow rate and head as selection considerations.
Plan for weight, water loss, and seasonal care
- Check the water level. K-State advises checking moving-water features regularly so a pump does not run dry and damage its motor. Open containers make the level easy to see; hidden reservoirs need deliberate top-ups. Wind, heat, and exposed rocks can increase water loss.
- Consider the support surface. Illinois Extension says water weighs about 8⅓ pounds per gallon, before the weight of a container, soil, or plants. Its example of a 20-gallon container can exceed 200 pounds once those materials are included. Calculate the actual filled load and check that a deck or support can bear it; do not use the example as the weight of every fountain.
- Account for splash. A fountain can lose water faster through splashing, and wet paving may become slippery. Position it with nearby walking surfaces in mind.
- Prepare for freezing weather. Remove the pump before freezing conditions and drain or store features that are not freeze-proof. A ceramic container left full through a freeze can crack.
- Use electrical equipment carefully. Follow the pump’s instructions and local requirements. UF/IFAS advises disconnecting power before working on electrical equipment and checking wiring for damage. The disappearing-fountain guide recommends a nearby GFCI-protected outlet; position cords to limit water intrusion and access by children or pets.
For container placement and splash considerations, see Illinois Extension’s container water garden guidance.
