For a full-size Halloween graveyard boundary, build modular panels from 1/2-inch PVC pickets and 1×2 lumber rails, then stake the supports at the display site. For a smaller scene, short lath sections attached to stakes are a simpler alternative. The right dimensions and anchoring depend on your layout and yard conditions; the examples below are specific plans, not universal structural specifications.
Choose a fence style for your display
| Approach | Scale and example dimensions | Materials and best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size PVC-and-lumber panels | One Selene Builds Things design uses 8-foot-long panels with ten pickets per panel, each 26 to 34 inches tall, spaced 9.5 inches on center. Hallmark’s plan instead spaces support posts about 6 feet apart and allows the builder to vary picket lengths. | 1/2-inch PVC pickets, 1×2 rails, supports, screws, and stakes or dowels. Use for a longer cemetery boundary built in sections. |
| Compact lath-and-stake sections | Home Depot’s tutorial attaches two 18-inch lath pieces to stakes for short decorative sections. | Lath, stakes, and optional tombstones or faux chain. Use for a small scene rather than as a substitute for full-size panels. |
These are distinct documented approaches; the guides do not provide comparative testing for durability, wind resistance, cost on the same materials list, or reuse life.
Materials and tools for a full-size panel
Start with a panel plan and adapt the quantities to your fence length. The following list combines items used across the full-size tutorials; individual designs do not necessarily use every item.
- 1/2-inch PVC pipe for pickets
- 1×2 lumber or furring strips for horizontal rails
- Support posts, such as the 2-inch PVC supports used in Hallmark’s example
- Exterior or deck screws; flat L brackets where the chosen design calls for them
- Garden stakes or wooden dowels to secure the display at ground level
- A drill, measuring tape, saw or PVC cutter, and safety glasses
- A hole saw or other suitable drill bit for the rails; match the opening to the actual pipe and chosen plan
- Black spray paint formulated for plastic; optional brown and orange exterior paint for a rust effect
Hallmark’s project also lists glue and, for its optional sign, foam insulation board. Finials are an optional detail in Selene Builds Things’ panel plan.

Build the 8-foot modular PVC example
This is one specific layout from Selene Builds Things, published September 25, 2026—not a standard fence dimension. It uses two 1x2x8-foot rails and ten 1/2-inch PVC pickets per panel, with pickets 26 to 34 inches tall and spaced 9.5 inches on center. Rail placement creates a scalloped top.
- Plan the panel count and cuts. The tutorial’s cut plan uses fifteen 10-foot pipes to make sixty pickets for six panels. Recalculate for your own panel count and picket shape, and allow for saw kerf if cutting with a saw.
- Mark the rails. Lay out ten picket positions per panel at the example spacing, adjusting the pattern if you change the panel dimensions.
- Drill the rail openings. Use a hole saw or suitable bit sized for the pipe in your actual materials. The tutorials’ hole sizes and components are design-specific, so check fit before drilling every rail.
- Cut and arrange the pickets. Cut the PVC to the lengths required for the scalloped outline. Place the pickets through the rail openings and check the intended top profile before fastening.
- Fasten the assembly. The author recommends predrilling through the rails into the PVC before driving screws to reduce the chance of cracking the pipe.
- Fit supports and connect panels. Follow the support layout in the plan you have chosen; Hallmark’s separate design uses support posts about six feet apart and attaches rails with flat L brackets.
Make a compact lath-and-stake version
For a small graveyard display, Home Depot’s example uses two 18-inch lath pieces attached to stakes to form short fence sections. Add tombstones or faux chain if they suit the scene. This approach is intended as compact decor; its dimensions do not describe the full-size PVC panel system.

- Small Black Resin Fence with Gargoyles on the Posts
- Made to be used in your Lemax Spooky Town Village Collection
- 5 sections: Each section is 3" long and the posts are 3" tall
Set up the fence at the site
Both full-size tutorials describe staking as a way to hold a temporary fence in the ground. Hallmark’s example drives stakes into the ground and places larger PVC support pipes over them; Selene Builds Things lists 1/2-inch wooden dowels as stakes. These are examples, not tested solutions for every site.
- Check the ground and layout before choosing stake placement and panel spacing.
- Adapt the anchoring to the soil, exposure, and yard conditions where the display will stand; the tutorials do not establish a design that is safe or reliable for all wind and ground conditions.
- Keep the installation appropriate for a temporary decorative display, and do not treat the example panels as a tested structural fence.
Paint and add haunted details
Hallmark recommends a black spray-paint base formulated for plastic. After it dries, dab on brown and orange exterior paint for a mottled rust effect. Optional finishing details across the plans include PVC finials, skulls, an archway sign made from foam insulation board, tombstones, or faux chain. Choose details that fit your display; they are not required for the fence structure.

Project time and cost example
