It can reduce routine watering for plants that prefer even moisture, but it still needs regular checking and refilling. This guide follows the University of Maryland Extension’s five-gallon bucket design; larger tub systems use different dimensions and construction, so do not mix the two plans.
How a self-watering planter works
The reservoir sits beneath the growing medium. A wick or a column of moist growing medium draws water upward through capillary action as the plant uses moisture. Many designs also include an overflow opening to set the reservoir’s maximum water level. The University of Maryland Extension describes the mechanism this way: “In most cases, water is wicked up from the reservoir into the medium.” University of Maryland Extension explains the principle and its bucket design.
The design below uses a perforated lid as a false bottom, short pieces of perforated drain tile to support it, and a side outlet tube positioned above the bucket base. Follow the dimensions and complete steps in the Extension’s guide rather than treating parts from a larger tub design as interchangeable.

- TURN ANY 5-GALLON BUCKET INTO A SELF-WATERING PLANTER: GroBucket is a planter insert that turns a standard 5-gallon bucket into a simple self-watering container garden. Bucket not included, so you can use your own bucket and start growing with less daily watering.
- BUILT-IN WATER RESERVOIR WITH REFILL INDICATOR: Each insert creates a 1-gallon water reservoir below the soil, giving roots steady access to moisture as needed. The water level indicator shows when it is time to refill, helping reduce guesswork.
- HEALTHY ROOTS START WITH A BETTER SYSTEM: GroBucket’s LifeTested design helps roots get steady moisture, airflow, and a visible refill cue for stronger, healthier growth. Water stays below the soil, excess water can drain, and the indicator shows when it’s time to refill.
- GROW FRESH PRODUCE ALMOST ANYWHERE: Use GroBucket for tomatoes, peppers, herbs, flowers, and other container garden plants. It works well for patios, balconies, decks, porches, greenhouses, and small garden spaces where traditional raised beds may not fit.
- PORTABLE, FLEXIBLE BUCKET GARDENING: The bucket-based design makes your planter easier to move, reposition, or bring under cover before cold weather. Choose your own bucket style or color to match your space while getting the benefit of a self-watering insert system.
- Food-grade five-gallon bucket with lid
- Short section of four-inch perforated drain tile
- Plastic tubing
- Screw and electrical tape
- Milk jug to collect overflow
Its listed tools include a saw, drill and drill bits, utility knife, and hacksaw. The source’s complete measurements and assembly directions are available in the University of Maryland Extension construction guide.
Build the bucket planter
- Prepare the false bottom. Cut the bucket lid so it fits inside the bucket, then drill holes in it as directed in the Maryland Extension plan. The perforations allow water and growing medium to interact while the lid separates the reservoir below from the planting area above.
- Support the lid. Cut short pieces of four-inch perforated drain tile and position them inside the bucket to hold the perforated lid above the base. Use the source guide’s measurements for the tile pieces and lid placement.
- Install the overflow outlet. Drill the side opening and fit the plastic tube so its outlet sits two inches above the bucket bottom. This establishes the reservoir’s maximum water level; the tube can direct excess water into a milk jug.
- Check the assembly before planting. Make sure the false bottom is supported, the tube is secure, and water can leave through the outlet. The Maryland plan uses a screw and electrical tape in its assembly; consult its instructions for where and how these parts are used.
- Add growing medium and plants. The Extension’s example fills the bucket with about four gallons of moistened medium before planting. Use the full guide for its preparation and planting details.
Set the water level and refill responsibly
For the Maryland bucket example, add two to three gallons of water after planting. Excess water drains through the outlet tube into the milk jug. Return collected overflow to the reservoir before adding fresh water.

In the Extension’s example, a bucket in full sun that receives no rain may need water every day in July and August. The reported amount is one to two quarts daily to fill the reservoir, for this five-gallon bucket design and context; it is not a general watering rate for other container sizes, climates, plants, or seasons. Check the reservoir rather than relying on a fixed schedule. The Maryland Extension guide provides the example and its qualifications.
Choose plants that suit steady moisture
Self-watering containers are most useful for plants that benefit from consistently available moisture. Illinois Extension names vegetables and tropical houseplants as examples. Plants that need their growing medium to dry between waterings—including many cacti and succulents—are generally poor candidates. Match the container to the plant’s moisture needs, not just to its size or appearance. See Illinois Extension’s container drainage guidance.

Overflow, drainage, and maintenance
Keep a defined maximum water level
An overflow opening prevents the reservoir from filling beyond its intended level. In the bucket plan, the outlet is two inches above the bottom. A different, larger wicking-container design from the University of Kentucky uses perforated pipe to form a false bottom and specifies that the reservoir should not rise above that pipe. These are design-specific instructions, not dimensions to combine.
Do not use gravel as a drainage fix
Adding gravel beneath potting soil does not reliably improve drainage. Illinois Extension explains that water can perch in the soil above a gravel layer, leaving the root zone wetter than intended. Build the reservoir and overflow into the planter’s design instead of relying on a gravel layer. Illinois Extension describes the drainage issue.

A larger container can be built as a wicking system, but it is a separate construction plan. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension’s AEN-157 guide describes a muck tub with four-inch perforated pipe shaped into a reservoir ring, a 1.5- or 2-inch PVC fill tube, peat moss wicking material, compost and potting soil, filter or landscape fabric, water columns, and a drain or overflow. Use its diagram and complete directions for that build rather than adapting the bucket measurements.

The Kentucky guide notes rocks as an alternative some builders use in a reservoir, but they add substantial weight; its example estimates about 110 pounds per cubic foot. That is a material-weight illustration, not evidence of better watering performance. Review the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension wicking-container guide before choosing that variation.
What this planter can—and cannot—do
A properly built reservoir and wick or soil column can make moisture available from below, reducing how often some suitable plants need watering. It does not make the container maintenance-free: reservoir level, overflow, and cleanliness still need attention. The Extension guides describe construction options, but they do not establish one universally best wick material or reservoir size for every planter, nor do they provide a controlled comparison of water savings or plant yields.
