You can cut grooves and rabbets without a dado set using either a standard table-saw blade and repeated passes or a router with a straight bit and guide. The table saw method is a practical choice for straight, through cuts when the workpiece fits the saw; a guided router offers more flexibility for large panels and stopped cuts. In either case, test the setup on scrap and size the cut to the mating piece.

First, identify the cut

  • Groove: a channel that runs with the grain.
  • Dado: a channel that crosses the grain.
  • Rabbet: an open-sided recess cut along a board edge or end.

The distinction matters because grain direction affects tear-out and blade choice. The methods below use a standard table-saw blade or a router rather than a dado stack.

Method 1: Cut the groove or rabbet on a table saw

With a single blade, make the two sides of the cut first, then remove the waste between them with repeated passes. This avoids installing a dado set, but requires careful fence positioning and a fit check against the mating stock.

Cut a groove with repeated passes

  1. Use matching stock to make a spacer and mark the desired groove on the workpiece.
  2. Set the blade height for the intended groove depth and position the fence for the first edge of the groove.
  3. Cut the first edge. Use the spacer and a clamped stop block to establish the second edge reproducibly, then make that cut.
  4. Clear the waste between the two cuts by shifting the fence by approximately one blade kerf at a time and making additional passes until the bottom is clear.
  5. Test the groove with the mating material. If ridges remain on the bottom, flatten them with a chisel close to the groove width or sandpaper fixed to a scrap block.

For this particular single-blade groove method, WOOD Magazine advises keeping the depth to no more than one-third of the stock thickness. That is guidance for the described method, not a universal rule for every groove or joint.

Choose a blade for the grain direction

For a groove running with the grain, WOOD recommends a rip blade. It notes that a combination blade’s alternating top-bevel teeth can leave ridges that may need flattening for a glue joint; its article states, “The flat-ground teeth on a rip blade leave a smoother cut.” For a dado crossing the grain, WOOD warns that a rip blade can cause chip-out and recommends a combination blade instead. See WOOD Magazine’s single-blade groove and rabbet method (published September 17, 2019).

Adapt the method for a rabbet

The same repeated-pass approach can form a rabbet, but add a sacrificial wooden face to the fence so the blade does not cut into the saw’s metal fence. Set the workpiece and fence for the rabbet’s open edge, then remove the waste in controlled passes and check the fit.

Method 2: Use a guided router

A plunge router, straight bit, and straightedge guide can cut grooves, dadoes, and rabbets without a dado set. Clamp the work securely, lay out both ends of the cut, align the guide at both ends, and verify the measurements agree before routing. Lock the plunge depth and practice on scrap. Fine Woodworking’s skill-builder makes its described cut from left to right; confirm feed direction and technique against the router maker’s instructions and the actual setup.

Set depth and make multiple passes when needed

In Fine Woodworking’s guide, cuts 1/4 inch deep or less may be made in one pass; deeper cuts should be made in several passes. For a rabbet, Woodcraft also advises shallow passes, secure workholding, and an exit scrap to reduce tear-out. If a dado or groove is wider than the bit, use multiple guided passes to reach the final width. Woodcraft describes a shop-made T-square jig or guide arrangement for wider dadoes; Kreg describes setting position and depth with a router-table fence and widening a groove, dado, or rabbet through several passes.

Choose handheld routing or a router table

A handheld router with an edge guide or clamped straightedge suits many larger workpieces and can reach stopped cuts that a table-saw pass cannot make in the same way. A router table and fence can be useful for some small parts or repeated operations, provided the work is secured and the setup follows the machine’s instructions. Woodcraft and Kreg describe these approaches in their guides to rabbets, dadoes, and grooves and router-table operations.

Choose a method that fits the work

Consideration Single-blade table saw Guided router
Best fit Straight through cuts on stock that can be handled safely on the saw. Large workpieces, stopped cuts, or work where a guide can be positioned more easily than the saw fence.
How width is made Two edge cuts, then repeated passes to clear the waste. One or more passes with a straight bit; wider cuts require multiple guided passes.
Fit and cleanup Test against the mating stock; bottom ridges may need a matching-width chisel or sandpaper on scrap. Practice on scrap and verify guide alignment and cut width before routing the workpiece.
Blade or cutter considerations WOOD recommends a rip blade for grooves along the grain and cautions against using it for across-grain dadoes because of chip-out. Requires a suitable straight bit and an edge guide, straightedge, or appropriate router-table fence.
Repeated or heavier material removal Repeated passes can be time-consuming and require careful fence changes. Multiple shallow passes can widen or deepen the cut. Woodcraft notes a dado setup can remove more material per pass for production quantities or wider, deeper cuts; any dado stack must be compatible with the particular saw.

For general depth context, Woodcraft says rabbet depth should generally not exceed two-thirds of stock thickness and dadoes are normally no deeper than half the stock thickness. These are source-specific rules of thumb, not guarantees of joint strength, and they differ from WOOD’s one-third guidance for its particular table-saw groove method.

Safety and setup checks

No single setup is safe for every saw, router, or workpiece. Consult the manual for the specific machine and follow its instructions for guards, workholding, push devices, and non-through cuts. A technique description does not replace model-specific safeguards. Before buying a blade, bit, or guide, check compatibility with your machine.
