A precision mobile drip irrigation (PMDI) system can deliver water near the soil surface while a center pivot or lateral-move machine crosses a field. That placement may reduce exposure to wind and evaporation, but it does not guarantee lower costs or higher yields. Results depend on the field, system design, maintenance and the application method it replaces.

What a drag-hose irrigation system is

In PMDI, drip tubing is attached to a center pivot or lateral-move irrigation machine and pulled across the field. Water exits through emitters close to the soil surface. The system combines the moving coverage of a pivot with drip-style delivery; it is an irrigation application method and a retrofit for compatible equipment, not a standalone promise of particular results.

“Drag hose” can describe other agricultural uses, too. Pivot-mounted PMDI is distinct from pod-line irrigation used in pasture and from hose-drag wastewater application. The term alone does not establish how a system is designed or what it applies.

Installations vary in manifold layout, line spacing and length, flow rate, filtration, and pressure regulation. Oregon State University Extension notes that spacing should be selected for the crop, soil and rooting depth, and that some systems combine drip lines with standard sprinkler packages. These design differences matter when evaluating performance or comparing costs.

Why growers consider PMDI—and what the evidence shows

Applying water close to the ground can reduce its exposure to wind and evaporation and may improve infiltration. That is a potential advantage, not proof of a universal water-saving or yield benefit. The appropriate comparison is with the field’s existing irrigation method and conditions.

One grower’s reported results

A 2017 Successful Farming feature reported Bob Gruner’s experience with PMDI. He said irrigation expenses fell by “30% or more” and yields increased by “at least 20%.” In his account, wheat averaged 68 bushels per acre under PMDI compared with his usual 50 to 55, while late corn averaged 210 to 220 bushels per acre over two years, compared with a typical 175 to 180. He also described a year with 5½ inches of rain and said irrigation on the PMDI field stopped a month earlier.

Those figures are an individual grower’s reported experience, not a controlled estimate or a forecast for other farms. Gruner also described installation costs of $100 to $200 per acre, varying with design and hose spacing. That is a historical report from 2017, not a current quote or budget. His statement that water “spreads out and seeps into the soil before it has a chance to run off, evaporate, or blow away in a mist” is grower testimony, not an independent measurement of system-wide efficiency.

Field research and operating observations

A 2008 Kansas corn comparison published in Applied Engineering in Agriculture found no yield difference between PMDI and in-canopy sprinklers. The abstract reported apparent reduced PMDI flow associated with emitter clogging, even though the water supply was filtered. After accounting for the decreased flow, the system had higher water-use-efficiency values; the authors nevertheless identified clogging as a concern for large-acreage systems. These findings do not establish that PMDI will produce a yield gain in other crops or fields.

A 2017 Texas A&M AgriLife Extension paper, based on a survey completed by five growers, describes design and management experience rather than a broad performance trial. It reports variation in line spacing, line length, filtration and pressure regulation, along with practical issues such as adjusting lines when changing pivot direction to avoid crop damage or entanglement.

What to evaluate before retrofitting a pivot

Oregon State University Extension identifies potential limitations including higher upfront costs for hoses and retrofitting, tubing damage, residue interference and uneven terrain. Use the following questions to assess whether those trade-offs fit the field and operation.

  • Water delivery and field conditions: How do wind exposure, soil infiltration, field slope and uneven ground affect the current method? Rocks, ruts and rough terrain can reduce mobile-drip performance.
  • Crop and layout: Are line spacing and placement suited to the crop, rooting depth and row arrangement? Consider whether hoses could snag in heavy crop residue or interfere with crop operations.
  • Pressure and system design: What flow rate, manifold arrangement and pressure regulation does the installation require? Texas survey participants used different configurations, so a design should be evaluated for the specific pivot and field.
  • Maintenance capacity: Can the operation inspect and maintain emitters, tubing, filters and end plugs? The Texas survey noted minor rodent damage among three growers and an end-plug issue at one installation.
  • Operational flexibility: What adjustments are needed when the pivot changes direction? Growers surveyed in Texas reported adjusting lines to avoid crop damage or entanglement.
  • Economics: Compare the retrofit expense and ongoing maintenance with the existing system’s costs and performance. The 2017 per-acre figure above is one grower’s historical installation report, not a current estimate.

Filtration, clogging and tubing care

Good filtration is needed to help prevent emitter clogging, according to Oregon State University Extension. It is not a guarantee against blockage: the Kansas comparison reported apparent clogging despite filtered supply water. A maintenance plan should account for the water source, filtration, emitter inspection and the possibility of flow reduction.

Mobile-drip tubing needs heavy walls to reduce the risk of tearing or splitting. Field residue can snag hoses, and rocks, ruts or uneven terrain can impair operation. These are not incidental details: tubing durability, field preparation and the ability to service lines influence whether a retrofit is practical.

How PMDI compares with other irrigation choices

There is no single best application system for every field. Compare alternatives against the operation’s actual constraints rather than relying on a broad efficiency claim.

Decision factor What to compare
Application placement Whether water is applied near the soil surface or through sprinklers, and how wind and evaporation affect delivery in the field.
Water and pumping requirements System design, pressure needs and the operation’s water supply; do not assume a particular saving without field-specific evidence.
Crop and soil fit Crop and row layout, rooting depth, soil infiltration and slope.
Clogging and maintenance Filtration, emitter inspection, tubing durability and available labor for repairs.
Terrain and residue Rocks, ruts, uneven ground and crop residue that could snag or damage hoses.
Cost and flexibility Retrofit expense, upkeep and the adjustments needed for pivot direction or other operating conditions.

LEPA is a separate irrigation application method, not another name for PMDI. Oregon State Extension says LEPA can exceed 95% efficiency when correctly managed; that figure applies to LEPA and should not be attributed to PMDI.
