Use a fitting approved for the actual pipe ends, materials, size and installation location—not a generic rubber sleeve. Copper entering a cast-iron hub typically uses a copper-alloy ferrule or listed compression joint. A plain, hubless cast-iron end needs a mechanical coupling specifically listed for that copper-to-cast-iron transition. Confirm the locally adopted plumbing code and follow the selected fitting’s instructions.
Identify the cast-iron end and copper pipe first
A cast-iron stack may end in a hub—a socket or bell—or in a plain, hubless end. The connection method depends on which one you have. Before selecting a fitting, identify the copper tube type and size, cast-iron nominal size and end configuration, and whether the joint is aboveground or belowground. Without those details and the project location, an exact fitting or part number cannot be specified responsibly.
- Hub: The cast iron has a socket or bell that accepts a ferrule or other approved hub joint.
- Hubless/plain end: The pipe has no socket. A mechanical coupling must be listed for the materials, dimensions and location involved.
- Location: Aboveground and belowground installations may require different coupling listings or standards.
Connecting copper to a cast-iron hub
For copper pipe or tubing entering a cast-iron hub, the 2024 International Residential Code, section P3003.13.1, says: “Joints between copper pipe or tubing and cast-iron hub pipe shall be made with a copper-alloy ferrule or compression joint.” In the ferrule method, the copper is soldered or brazed to the copper-alloy ferrule, which then joins to the cast-iron hub by caulking or mechanical compression. See the 2024 IRC plumbing provisions.
The 2025 California Plumbing Code §705.10.1 likewise describes a listed compression-type joint or copper-alloy ferrule for copper or copper-alloy pipe/tubing to cast iron. It specifies soldering or brazing the copper end to the ferrule and joining the ferrule to the cast-iron hub by compression or caulking. This is California code language, not a substitute for checking the code adopted where the work is being done. See the 2025 California Plumbing Code.

Connecting copper to a hubless cast-iron end
Use a mechanical coupling whose listing and manufacturer instructions explicitly cover the copper-to-cast-iron transition and the installation location. A product described only as a “no-hub coupling” may be intended for cast iron joined to cast iron, not copper. Fernco, for example, distinguishes its standard No-Hub Couplings for compatible cast-iron-to-cast-iron joints from its Proflex shielded transition coupling for aboveground DWV work between different materials, including copper. Check the particular product’s size and listing rather than relying on the family name: Fernco shielded couplings.
The 2025 California Plumbing Code’s general mechanical-coupling provisions name ASTM C1173 for belowground use, ASTM C1460 for aboveground use, and ASTM C1461 for aboveground and belowground use. They also require installation in accordance with manufacturer instructions. These are California provisions; verify which standards and requirements apply under the locally adopted code. The code text is available in section 705 of the 2025 California Plumbing Code.

How to choose a transition coupling
Read the product page and installation instructions before buying. The fitting should be identified as a copper-to-cast-iron transition—not merely as a no-hub coupling—and should match both pipe ends and the site conditions.
- Confirm the listed pipe materials and exact transition.
- Match the copper tube and cast-iron nominal sizes, as well as their end configurations.
- Verify the listing or standard for aboveground or belowground installation.
- Follow the fitting maker’s installation steps and any specified clamp torque. Do not transfer a torque value from a different coupling or brand.
- Check local code and approval requirements before installation.
For example, Charlotte Pipe describes its CISPI 310 products as shielded hubless cast-iron couplings with an elastomeric gasket, stainless-steel shield and clamps. Its standard no-hub product page gives a 60 inch-pound torque for specified sizes of that company’s standard coupling and identifies separate standards for heavy-duty products. That value is specific to the stated products and sizes; it is not a general torque for transition couplings. See Charlotte Pipe’s no-hub coupling information.

When to bring in a plumber
Cast-iron stack work can involve supporting the pipe during a cut, maintaining drainage and venting arrangements, and meeting inspection requirements. Those decisions depend on the building and local rules, not just on the fitting. Charlotte Pipe’s installation manual recommends observing local codes and manufacturer instructions and says its guidance is intended for licensed plumbing contractors. If the stack must be cut or altered, or its support and condition are uncertain, have a licensed plumber assess the work. See Charlotte Pipe’s cast-iron installation manual.
