Compost, Recycle, or Trash? How to Sort Household Waste

A practical guide to sorting household waste: what commonly belongs in recycling or compost, why local rules matter, and how to handle items that need special disposal.

Check your city, county, solid-waste agency, or hauler’s current accepted-material rules first. Put only accepted, clean recyclables in recycling; compost only materials accepted by your backyard pile or local organics program; and follow local instructions for everything else. National guidance is useful, but it cannot tell you exactly what your local program takes.

How to decide where an item goes

  1. Check local acceptance. Look up your waste provider’s recycling and organics lists. Rules vary by location, and compost facilities do not all accept the same materials. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises checking local guidance rather than assuming a material is accepted everywhere. EPA’s common-recyclables guide and its recycling FAQ explain why.
  2. Check the item’s condition and preparation. For recycling, EPA’s general guidance is to empty and rinse metal, glass, and plastic so food debris is removed; paper should be clean and dry. Follow your provider’s directions on lids, labels, and how to place materials in the bin. Food or other nonaccepted material can contaminate a recycling load.
  3. Check which composting route you have. A backyard pile, municipal collection, drop-off site, and community compost program can have different accepted materials. A material suitable for one route may be rejected by another.
  4. Use trash or a special route for what remains. If the item is not accepted in either local stream, follow your provider’s disposal instructions. Hazardous household waste, used oil, electronics, and other special materials may need a designated drop-off or handling route; do not assume they belong in ordinary trash or a curbside bin.

What commonly goes in recycling

Paper and cardboard, food cans, glass bottles and jars, and some plastic bottles are common examples of recyclables. They are examples, not a universal accepted-material list: local programs differ, including on which plastics they collect. Check the local list before putting an item in the bin.

Plastic bags and wraps, electronics, textiles, and food-soiled paper often need a different route or special instructions. Do not put an item in recycling just because it has a recycling symbol; the symbol alone does not establish that your local program accepts it.

What can go in compost

Backyard compost piles

For a typical backyard pile, EPA lists fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and paper filters, eggshells, leaves, grass clippings, twigs, and certain untreated plant matter as examples of compostable inputs. Composting at home has limits: EPA advises keeping meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats, oils, grease, pet waste and litter, produce stickers, treated wood, diseased plants, and compostable serviceware out of a typical backyard pile. Its home composting guidance describes suitable materials and methods.

Municipal and community programs

Some municipal or commercial facilities accept materials that do not belong in a backyard pile, but acceptance is facility-specific. Use a food-scrap or organics collection route for a material only when that program explicitly lists it. If you do not have space for a pile, EPA describes curbside collection, drop-off, and community composting approaches; availability and accepted materials depend on local service.

Compostable packaging is not ordinary recycling

Compostable plastic should not go in ordinary plastic recycling: EPA warns that it can contaminate and disrupt that stream. Put compostable packaging in an organics collection only if the local program specifically accepts it. If no local route accepts it, follow your provider’s disposal instructions.

What to do with a questionable item

  • It is clean, dry where required, and listed as accepted for recycling: put it in recycling as directed.
  • It is organic and listed as accepted for your composting route: put it in that route. Do not assume backyard and commercial compost rules match.
  • It is not listed, is contaminated, or needs special handling: check your provider’s directions before binning it. When a material is not accepted in either stream, use the local trash or special-disposal instructions.

When both recycling and composting seem possible, compare the local acceptance rules, required preparation, and whether a separate drop-off is available. There is no reliable universal ranking of these routes by environmental benefit: EPA says impacts depend on the material and the management scenario.

Why sorting organics matters—and what the figures mean

EPA reports that 66.2 million tons of wasted food were generated in the U.S. food retail, food service, and residential sectors in 2019, and 5 percent of that wasted food was composted. Those figures describe the United States in 2019, not a current measurement of any one community. EPA also reports that food made up 24.1 percent of municipal solid waste in U.S. landfills, based on 2018 data. These national statistics provide context; they do not change local collection rules.

EPA’s composting overview also reports that municipal solid-waste landfills accounted for approximately 14 percent of U.S. human-related methane emissions in 2022, and that wasted food was responsible for 58 percent of landfill methane emissions in the 2022 context cited by EPA. These are attributed national figures for the stated year and context, not a live or local estimate. EPA describes composting as “nature’s way of recycling” and as a way to reduce landfill trash and build healthy soil.

Finding the rule that applies where you live

Start with the current waste-sorting page from your city, county, solid-waste agency, or hauler. Check separate lists for curbside recycling, organics collection, drop-off sites, and special waste. State and local governments set composting policies and regulations, and some jurisdictions restrict landfill disposal of organic materials. Without a specified location, no single accepted-material list or legal rule can be applied universally.
