The outcome depends especially on how many seasons an artificial tree is reused, how a real tree is disposed of, and how far you travel to get either one. Household priorities such as storage, cleanup, and preference for a tree’s scent also matter, but they are separate from the lifecycle comparison.
What the environmental comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A 2018 lifecycle assessment by WAP Sustainability Consulting, commissioned by the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA), compared a 6.5-foot artificial tree with a similar farm-grown Fraser fir sold in the United States. It included a stand but excluded lights and ornaments. The artificial tree was modeled for one, five, or ten years of use; the real tree was modeled for one season. Those boundaries make the findings useful for understanding trade-offs, not a universal verdict for every tree, household, or region. Read the assessment.
In that study’s aggregate comparison, the artificial tree reached an approximate environmental break-even after 4.7 years of use—often rounded to about five years. That is a result of this particular model, not a rule that applies to all impact categories or disposal choices. The report notes that customer choices significantly affect the impacts of both kinds of tree.
The assessment found that manufacturing and raw materials were the main contributors to the artificial tree’s impacts. For a real tree, the end-of-life route made a substantial difference. The study compared landfill, incineration, and composting, and recommended composting among the routes it assessed. It also identified travel distance to obtain a tree as a factor. Neither “buy local” nor “real is always better” follows automatically: the actual source, trip, and disposal route matter.

A later analysis described in Axios reporting from December 2024 suggested that an artificial tree reused three to five times could have a lower carbon footprint than real trees disposed of harmfully each year, while composted or landfilled real trees could compare favorably even with a five-year artificial tree. Because the full methods of that newer study are not established here, its reported range should not be treated as a replacement universal threshold for the 2018 assessment. Read the Axios report.
Compare the options for your household

How to make a lower-impact choice
- If you already own an artificial tree, reuse it. The 2018 assessment’s approximate 4.7-year break-even applies to its modeled tree and assumptions. Replacing a usable artificial tree early can undermine the benefit of spreading its manufacturing impacts over time.
- If buying a real tree, plan its end of life first. Check whether your municipality, local nonprofit, or tree farm offers seasonal collection or mulching, and confirm accepted materials and dates. The 2018 assessment preferred composting among its evaluated disposal routes; local programs differ.
- Consider the whole trip. Compare where each option comes from and how you would transport it. A short trip for one option is not automatically better if other parts of its lifecycle differ.
- Choose for realistic use, not an ideal plan. An artificial tree only spreads its production impacts if you keep and use it. A real tree’s environmental result depends partly on how it is handled after the holidays.
Practical details that can tip the decision
For a real tree
Measure the space and ceiling height before shopping, and choose a stand that matches the tree’s height and trunk diameter. A reservoir or watering funnel can make upkeep easier, but it does not replace checking and replenishing the water. Keep the tree away from heat sources and use sound electrical equipment; a dry tree still deserves care. Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources, citing the National Fire Protection Association, reports that approximately one-tenth of one percent of residential fires involve a Christmas tree, real or artificial. For an artificial tree
Check that you have space to store the tree between seasons, and keep it protected from moisture and damage so it remains usable. A storage bag is an optional way to contain the packed branches and protect them during storage; it is a practical accessory, not an environmental requirement.

The National Christmas Tree Association reports that 25–30 million real Christmas trees are sold annually in the United States and that close to 350 million real trees are growing on U.S. farms. The source page does not state a year for either figure, and these are association-reported numbers rather than government counts.
