Choose between them by the operation you need, the work material, screw size, cutter angle and drill compatibility—not by the number of pieces in the box.
What a countersinking set does
A countersink forms a conical recess at the opening of a hole so a compatible screw head can sit flush or below the surface. A stand-alone countersink cutter makes that recess in a hole that has already been drilled. A woodworking combination set can do more: drill a tapered pilot hole, countersink the opening and, depending on its adjustment, counterbore for a deeper screw head in one operation.
Those configurations solve different problems. For installing screws in wood, a combination set can coordinate the pilot hole and recess. For finishing a pre-drilled hole or deburring an edge, a stand-alone cutter is the more direct tool. The term “set” alone does not tell you which operation is included.
Choose the set type for the job
Woodworking combination set
Look for tapered pilot drills, countersink or counterdrill units, and adjustable stop collars. The collar controls drilling depth and can help set the recess; check how it adjusts and which drills it fits. Lee Valley describes its combination units as designed for woodworkers and says the collars adjust from flush countersinking to a half-inch counterdrill. Its five-piece set covers screw sizes #5, #6, #7, #8 and #10; the eight-piece option adds #9, #12 and #14. Confirm that the included tapered drills and collars match the screws you actually use.

Stand-alone countersink set
These cutters are for beveling the mouth of an existing hole, and some can also deburr an edge. Check the cutter diameters and angle, the material the maker specifies, and the shank that connects to your drill. For example, DEWALT describes its DWAMDB5SETCS as a five-piece high-speed-steel set with an 82-degree tip, five flutes and cutters sized 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch; the manufacturer lists metal, wood and plastic as intended materials. Those specifications describe that product, not every countersink set.
Material-specific industrial set
For metalworking or mixed-material work, prioritize an explicitly stated material application and cutter material rather than assuming a woodworking bit will suit the job. ATA offers industrial kits with four to six cutters, including HSS-XE, ASP and carbide options, and lists 60-, 82-, 90- and 120-degree angles. Its stated applications include steel, stainless and acid-resistant steel, titanium alloys and light metals. DART lists countersink-drill categories including three-flute, slanting-hole and quick-change designs, as well as replacement drills; its stated applications span metals, non-ferrous metals, aluminum, sheet metal, veneered wood, laminated chipboard and PVC.

Match geometry to the screw and finish
Angle
The cutter angle determines the shape of the recess. Do not assume one angle fits every fastener: compare the screw-head geometry and intended result with the set specification. The cited DEWALT set has an 82-degree tip, while ATA’s industrial range includes 60, 82, 90 and 120 degrees. A wider range of angles is useful only if one matches your application.
Diameter and depth
The cutter must create a recess wide enough for the head without removing more material than necessary. Compare the set’s listed cutter diameters with the head and hole you need to finish. For screw installation in wood, also check the pilot-drill sizes and whether an adjustable collar controls depth. A collar’s range is not a substitute for confirming the correct pilot drill for the screw and material.

Screw-size coverage
Woodworking kits commonly identify coverage by screw size rather than by countersink diameter alone. Use that list to avoid buying a set that lacks the pilot drill for your fasteners. The Lee Valley five- and eight-piece options have different stated coverage; do not infer that a larger piece count automatically includes the sizes you need.
Check shank, chuck and replacement compatibility
- Shank: Confirm the set’s shank type fits your drill or driver. Bosch Professional’s HSS set, model 2 608 596 667, has three cutters with 8, 10 and 12 mm diameters and cylindrical shanks; Bosch says they fit three-jaw drill chucks.
- System components: For a combination kit, check whether the pilot drills and stop collars are included and compatible with one another.
- Replacement drills: If the system uses separate tapered drills, check whether compatible replacements are available. DART lists replacement-drill categories, but availability depends on the particular product and supplier.
A practical buying checklist
- Define the operation: Choose a pilot-drill-and-countersink combination for screw installation in wood, or a stand-alone cutter for an existing hole or deburring.
- Name the material: Use a set whose manufacturer specifies your work material; distinguish wood-focused screw kits from cutters listed for metal or mixed materials.
- Match the fastener: Check screw-size coverage for combination kits, and angle plus cutter diameter for stand-alone cutters.
- Set the required depth: If the screw should sit flush or below the surface, verify the collar or other depth-control arrangement and its adjustment range.
- Verify tool fit: Confirm the shank works with your drill chuck or driver and that any replacement bits fit the same system.
How to read performance claims
Product specifications and manufacturer claims are not independent comparisons. ATA says its RAPID-CUT version can provide up to 30% faster countersinking and up to 40% longer tool life; these are ATA’s stated benefits, and the cited page does not establish an independent comparative test. Treat such figures as claims for that product rather than a general promise about countersinks.
