Three Western Australian councils have planted street trees they hope will broaden the options for urban shade as conditions change. The Cities of Belmont, Melville and South Perth are taking part in a trial that will monitor the trees for six years—but the planting is a test, not proof that any species will withstand future climate conditions.
What the councils planted—and how many
The Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) reported on 7 October 2025 that 120 trees had been planted across urban streetscapes in Belmont, Melville and South Perth. PerthNow reported on 16 October 2025 that more than 100 underused species had been planted. Those are different claims: WALGA’s figure is a count of trees, while PerthNow’s is a count of species. Neither figure should be read as 120 species. WALGA’s project release and PerthNow’s report do not reconcile the difference.
Which tree species are named?
WALGA identifies five examples selected for the trial:
- Coastal banksia (Banksia integrifolia)
- Silver gimlet (Eucalyptus salubris)
- Strickland’s gum (Eucalyptus stricklandii)
- Jingymia mallee (Eucalyptus synandra)
- Lemon-flowered gum (Eucalyptus woodwardia)
The release does not rank these trees or provide comparative survival results. The examples show which candidates are involved, not which is best suited to a particular street or site.

Why were these candidates selected?
WALGA says the project is testing underused species considered more likely to thrive under future climate conditions. Its stated selection rationale is that the trees are hardy, have performed well in harsh environments such as the Goldfields and Wheatbelt, and are not commonly used in street plantings. The association also points to their potential to provide canopy and shade, cool local environments and support pollinators.
That rationale explains why the candidates were chosen; it is not evidence that the trial has already demonstrated future-climate tolerance. The release gives no climate thresholds or species-by-species performance data.

- Pin Oak (Red Oak) tree saplings, ready to plant and establish in your landscape.
- These resilient trees adapt well to various soil types and climates, making them ideal for long-term landscape planting.
- Each sapling measures approximately 12-16 inches tall, providing a young tree ready to grow into a grand shade tree.
What will the six-year trial measure?
WALGA says the trees will be monitored for six years to assess survival, health and long-term performance. The project received funding support from the Western Australian Planning Commission as an urban greening demonstration project. WALGA says results will be made publicly available through Treenet’s Street Tree Trials Database.
WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP described the intended value of the work: “The Climate Ready Street Tree trial project will assist in building knowledge and support both Local Governments and other land managers to create resilient urban forests.” That is a statement about the project’s purpose, not a report of completed outcomes.

What the planting can—and cannot—show so far
The councils have begun testing a broader street-tree palette, and the planned monitoring should help establish how the selected trees fare in the trial’s urban settings. But the project announcement contains no completed survival rate, health assessment or head-to-head comparison. It therefore does not establish which species will perform best, or prove that any will survive future climate conditions.
