What did the Cosmo Heater fact check establish?
PolitiFact examined social-media promotions claiming Elon Musk developed a Cosmo Heater using NASA technology and that it could reduce heating costs to “basically $0.” The fact check found no reports or statements supporting Musk’s involvement, no link between Musk and the product, and no substantiation for the NASA-engineer origin story. It also reported that an image showing Musk holding the heater had been altered from a Reuters photograph.
“Musk did not invent the ‘Cosmo Heater.’ We rate that claim False.”
That conclusion, published by Loreben Tuquero on January 3, 2024, addresses the invention claim and promotional story PolitiFact reviewed. It is not a direct test of every heater currently advertised under the Cosmo name, nor does it establish that every seller using that name is fraudulent.

Are the advertised savings real?
No product-specific energy-savings measurement for a verified Cosmo Heater model is established in the available sources. The “basically $0” bill claim and a social-post claim of an “almost 80%” reduction should be treated as advertising claims, not demonstrated results.
Before relying on a savings promise, identify the exact heater model and look for manufacturer documentation explaining its heating capacity, intended room use, power draw, and the conditions behind any savings estimate. Compare those details with your existing heating system and electricity costs. A celebrity endorsement or NASA reference is not evidence of lower bills.

What do the BBB records say—and what don’t they prove?
The BBB profile for “Cosmo Heaters” lists an appliance-sales business at a San Leandro, California address, a C rating, and a status of not BBB Accredited. BBB gives the rating reasons as failure to respond to one complaint and length of time in business. It also says it does not guarantee the accuracy of profile information or endorse businesses. The profile’s connection to the heater promoted in the social posts has not been verified, so it should not be treated as proof about that product or seller.
A separate BBB Scam Tracker entry dated January 31, 2025 recounts one consumer’s complaint about a “Cyber heater”: the person said it barely warmed a room and was dissatisfied with a partial refund. BBB describes Scam Tracker content as based on reports from victims and potential victims. The entry is one person’s account, and it does not establish that the Cyber heater is the Cosmo Heater.

How to assess a portable heater listing before buying
Because a current Cosmo model and seller have not been established, assess the exact listing rather than assuming products with similar names are the same. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s February 2024 staff assessment of portable electric heaters found inadequate hazard disclosures, unsafe marketing depictions, and possible counterfeit certification markings among the listings and products it reviewed. It is not a recall notice or a finding about a specific Cosmo Heater.
CPSC staff reviewed 10 heater manuals or instruction sets for that assessment; this is a sample count, not a failure rate. The assessment states: “Currently, there is no standard related to online safety information for portable electric heaters.” Its practical implication is to look beyond an attractive product page and verify the documentation and markings for the exact unit.

- Confirm identity: Find the manufacturer’s name and an exact model number on the listing and product documentation. If they are missing or inconsistent, you may not be able to verify what is being sold.
- Check certification claims: Look for a safety certification mark and verify the claim with the named certifier. A mark shown in an advertisement alone does not establish that the exact model is certified, and certification does not prove every performance claim.
- Read safety information before checkout: Check that warnings and instructions are easy to find, complete, and consistent between the listing, packaging information, and manual.
- Review intended use and performance: Confirm the manufacturer’s stated heating capacity and intended room use. Do not infer coverage or savings from a slogan.
- Check seller terms: Read the return policy, warranty, and seller identity before paying, and keep the listing and order records.
How to use a portable heater more safely
CPSC’s February 2024 assessment reproduces UL 1278 warning language for covered movable or wall-hung heaters: keep cords, drapery, and furnishings at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the heater, and away from its sides and rear. Follow the instructions for your specific heater; this general safety guidance does not establish that an unidentified Cosmo unit meets a standard or is safe to use.
Should you buy a Cosmo Heater?
Do not buy on the strength of the Musk endorsement, NASA origin story, or dramatic bill-savings claims: the fact check did not substantiate those promotions. If a listing does not let you identify the exact manufacturer and model, verify its safety claims, review its warnings, and understand the seller’s terms, you lack the information needed to assess that particular heater responsibly. The available evidence does not justify labeling every product called a Cosmo Heater a scam or declaring a specific model unsafe.
