East Wanneroo is moving through long-term planning, but official material does not establish that construction of its future train line has begun. The district plan protects a possible transit corridor; the Public Transport Authority is still studying the best public transport option. Separate precinct planning milestones are advancing development frameworks, while funding announced for power and water is not rail funding.
What is planned for East Wanneroo?
The Western Australian Government’s East Wanneroo District Structure Plan covers about 8,000 hectares and sets a long-term vision of around 50,000 new dwellings for up to 150,000 people over approximately 50 years. First published in August 2021, the plan page was updated on 3 June 2026. It guides future land use, community infrastructure, regional open space and environmental protection; it is not a construction schedule. Read the State’s East Wanneroo District Structure Plan.
Implementation is expected to occur in stages over decades. Development depends on further planning, including a district developer contribution plan, Metropolitan Region Scheme reservations and amendments, rezoning and local structure plans. These steps establish the framework and infrastructure arrangements needed before subdivision and development can proceed. The City of Wanneroo outlines the planning process.
What does the future train-line corridor show?
The City’s East Wanneroo material depicts an underground transit corridor running from a future extension of Elliot Road, through a future Gnangara Station, toward Franklin Road. The depiction is an indicative corridor, not a final engineering alignment. The City says the Public Transport Authority is undertaking studies to determine the optimum public transport scenario. See the City’s East Wanneroo overview.

The district plan describes protecting a future land reservation so a potential connection to the expanding METRONET network can be delivered when needed. It presents two North West rail-link options, reflecting that the plan safeguards a future choice rather than announcing a completed design. Western Australian Planning Commission chairman David Caddy wrote that protecting the reservation would help ensure the link could be delivered “without significant disruption” when needed. That statement describes the purpose of preserving land, not approval or funding for construction. The district structure plan sets out the reservation approach.
Which East Wanneroo planning milestones have occurred?
Precinct 6
The City advertised the Precinct 6 Local Structure Plan from 9 April to 22 May 2026. The proposed plan would provide a framework for future subdivision and development, including an indicative road network and transport-corridor alignment. Advertising a local structure plan is a planning step; it is not evidence that development or rail construction has started. The City provides East Wanneroo precinct information.

Precincts 7, 8 and 15
In July 2025, the Western Australian Planning Commission resolved to endorse local structure plans for Precincts 7, 8 and 15 subject to modifications. The City described the first three precinct approvals as paving the way for development. These endorsements are meaningful planning milestones, but they do not mean all 28 East Wanneroo precincts are under construction. Check the City’s precinct and map information.
Is the Wanneroo train line confirmed?
Not on the evidence in the official material cited here. The material establishes protection of a possible transit corridor and a study of the best public transport scenario. It does not establish a final mode or detailed alignment, an approved delivery program, rail construction funding, a construction start date or an opening date. The future Gnangara Station shown on the City’s corridor depiction should therefore be treated as indicative.

Does the $522 million budget announcement fund the train line?
No. Western Australia’s 2026–27 State Budget reports $522 million for power and water infrastructure across multiple growth corridors, including East Wanneroo, to support the opening of residential lots. The stated allocation is for power and water, not rail. See the 2026–27 State Budget.
